Verify your degree meets accounting standards
TN visa classification for Accounts Payable Managers depends on holding a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. A degree in business administration alone may not satisfy USCIS scrutiny, so confirm your transcript reflects a recognized accounting concentration before applying.
Target employers with AP department scale
Mid-size to large companies with dedicated accounts payable teams are far more likely to sponsor TN status than small businesses where AP is handled by a generalist. Search for roles advertising ERP system experience, team leadership, or month-end close responsibility as signals of a structured AP function.
Request a detailed offer letter before filing
Your TN documentation lives or dies on the employer's offer letter. It must specify your title as Accounts Payable Manager, confirm the role requires accounting expertise, and state that you hold the qualifying degree. A vague or HR-templated letter is a common reason CBP officers request additional documentation.
Clarify your visa pathway by nationality early
Mexican professionals face a 5,500-per-year TN allocation, so timing your application outside peak periods and confirming your employer understands consular processing at a U.S. embassy in Mexico matters. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a land port of entry or pre-clearance site without a prior visa appointment.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Not every Accounts Payable Manager posting is open to TN candidates. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers actively offering TN visa sponsorship, so you spend your time on roles where the hiring team already understands the process and has agreed to support your status.
Prepare for role scope questions at the border
CBP officers sometimes question whether an AP Manager role requires an accountant's specialized knowledge or is primarily supervisory. Bring documentation showing you'll perform hands-on accounting functions, such as reconciliations, accrual entries, or audit support, not only manage a team.
Accounts Payable Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Accounts Payable Manager role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the role is classified under the Accountant category in the USMCA TN occupation list. The position must require and you must hold a qualifying degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Roles framed as purely operational or administrative rather than accounting-specific may face closer scrutiny at adjudication.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for this role?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start working as soon as your application is approved, sometimes the same day at a port of entry. H-1B visa requires surviving a random lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate and waiting up to a year to begin work. For Accounts Payable Managers who qualify under USMCA, TN is a faster and more predictable path.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must supply a signed offer letter on company letterhead that states your title, describes the accounting duties of the role, confirms a qualifying degree is required, and identifies you by name. Some employers also include an organizational chart or job description to demonstrate the role's professional accounting scope, which strengthens the application package.
Where can I find Accounts Payable Manager jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job postings don't specify TN visa eligibility, which makes filtering difficult. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for roles at employers with recent visa filings for professional positions, so you can focus on companies experienced with visa sponsorship rather than negotiating support from scratch.
Can I switch employers while working as an Accounts Payable Manager on TN status?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. You must obtain a new TN approval before starting with a new employer. Canadian citizens can do this at a port of entry without leaving the country in advance. Mexican professionals must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico. There is no portability provision like the one available to H-1B holders under AC21.
