Confirm your credential matches USMCA categories
TN aviation roles require a degree or license that maps directly to the USMCA occupational list. An aeronautical engineering degree supports an engineer TN, but a general aviation management credential may not qualify without documented specialty occupation duties.
Target carriers and MROs with established TN pipelines
Airlines, aerospace manufacturers, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities regularly hire foreign nationals on TN status. Prioritize employers whose job postings specify TN visa eligibility, which signals internal HR familiarity with the USMCA process and faster offer-to-start timelines.
Request a role-specific offer letter before crossing
For Canadian applicants entering at a port of entry, CBP officers review your offer letter on the spot. It must state your job title, duties, wage, and employer address. A vague or generic letter is the single most common reason for TN denials at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to filter aviation jobs by TN sponsorship
Searching broadly wastes time when most postings don't clarify visa support. Migrate Mate lets you filter aviation roles by TN visa sponsorship so you're only applying to employers already set up to file.
Understand Mexican applicants need consular appointment timing
Mexican nationals cannot self-petition at the border like Canadians. You must schedule a U.S. consular interview, and appointment availability in Mexico City or Monterrey can stretch weeks out, so build that window into your offer negotiation with the employer.
Keep your FAA certificates current before the employer files
Aviation roles often require active FAA Airman Certificates or equivalent Transport Canada credentials. USCIS and CBP treat an expired certificate as a credential gap that can delay or void your TN, even if your degree and experience are otherwise sufficient.

Find Aviation JobsAviation TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which aviation occupations qualify for a TN visa under USMCA?
USMCA covers aviation roles that fit recognized professional categories, primarily aeronautical engineers, aerospace engineers, and computer systems analysts supporting aviation operations. Pilots, mechanics, and air traffic controllers generally do not qualify as TN professionals because those roles are classified as technical or craft occupations rather than specialty professions requiring a bachelor's degree.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for aviation professionals?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian applicants, which means you can receive approval the same day you cross the border with proper documentation. H-1B registration opens once a year and selection is randomized. For Canadian aerospace engineers or aviation analysts, TN is faster and more predictable. Mexican nationals still need a consular appointment but avoid the lottery entirely.
How do I find aviation employers who will sponsor a TN visa?
Most general job postings don't specify TN visa support, which means a lot of manual outreach to confirm eligibility. Migrate Mate filters aviation roles specifically by TN visa sponsorship, so you can target employers who have already agreed to support the filing rather than asking cold in every application.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for a TN aviation application?
Your employer must provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a summary of your duties, your start date, your wage, and the employer's contact information. For roles requiring FAA credentials or specific engineering licenses, some CBP officers also ask for copies of those certificates alongside your degree transcripts.
Can I switch aviation employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but you cannot start work for a new employer until a new TN is approved. Canadian professionals can apply at a port of entry with a new offer letter on the way to start the new job. Mexican nationals need to schedule a new consular appointment. There is no portability provision under TN the way there is under H-1B, so timing the transition carefully with both employers matters.
