Verify your degree matches the role
TN classification for Biologist requires a degree in a biological science field. A business or general science degree won't qualify even if you've worked in biology for years. Check your transcripts against the job description before applying.
Target employers with active LCA filings
Employers must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before sponsoring your TN. Research companies that have recently filed LCAs for biological scientist roles using the OFLC Wage Search to confirm they're familiar with the process.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Searching broadly for biology jobs won't surface which employers are TN-ready. Migrate Mate filters roles by visa sponsorship history so you're applying to companies that have already navigated the filing process for your occupation.
Prepare a role-specific support letter
Your employer's support letter must tie your biology degree directly to the job duties. A letter that describes generic lab work won't satisfy a CBP officer. Ask your hiring manager to reference specific biological science tasks outlined in your offer letter.
Understand the Mexican nationals consular path
If you're Mexican, you'll apply at a U.S. consulate for your TN visa stamp before crossing the border. Book your appointment early since consulate wait times vary by city and season, and bring your full LCA documentation to the interview.
Know what triggers a secondary inspection
Canadian applicants presenting at the border can be referred to secondary inspection if the CBP officer questions whether your role constitutes a qualifying specialty occupation. Bring published literature, project descriptions, or O*NET documentation showing biology as a distinct professional category.

Find Biologist JobsBiologist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Biologist role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Biologist is an explicitly listed occupation under the USMCA TN visa category. Your job duties must involve work in a recognized biological science discipline such as ecology, microbiology, zoology, or biochemistry, and you must hold a relevant degree. Roles that blend biology with non-qualifying functions may require closer scrutiny at entry.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Biologist positions?
TN has no annual cap or lottery for Canadians, so you can apply any time you have a job offer. H-1B is subject to an annual lottery with limited slots, meaning qualified applicants are routinely excluded for years. TN also processes faster and costs less in government fees. The tradeoff is that TN doesn't lead directly to permanent residence the way H-1B can.
Can I search for Biologist TN visa jobs on Migrate Mate?
Yes. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters opportunities by sponsorship history, so you're not wasting applications on employers unfamiliar with the TN process. You can search by occupation category and location to find Biologist roles at employers who have already filed Labor Condition Applications for life science positions.
What documents do I need to present as a Canadian biologist at the border?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, a formal job offer letter detailing your biology-specific duties, proof of your qualifying degree (transcripts or credential evaluation), and the certified LCA from your employer. CBP officers may also ask about your project scope, so bring supporting materials like a position description or professional portfolio if your role is research-based.
Does my subspecialty in biology affect TN eligibility?
The TN category covers Biologist broadly, but your degree and job title must align with a recognized biological science discipline. A role titled Environmental Scientist may qualify if duties are grounded in biology, while a position focused on data analysis with only incidental biology may not. CBP applies the specialty occupation standard, so your offer letter and credentials need to reflect genuine biological science work.
