Match your degree to the USMCA category
TN visa eligibility for biotech roles turns on whether your degree is in a qualifying life science field. A biochemistry or microbiology degree maps cleanly to the Scientist category. A general science or interdisciplinary degree may require a credential evaluation letter from your employer before filing.
Target employers with recent visa filings
Search for biotech employers with recent visa filings for Scientist or Scientific Technician roles. Companies experienced with sponsoring work visas understand the visa process and won't need educating during your offer negotiation. For TN status, Canadian applicants present their support letter directly at the U.S. port of entry, while Mexican applicants apply through a U.S. consulate—both processes are straightforward for employers who've handled visa sponsorship before.
Request a TN support letter before your border crossing
Canadian professionals present their TN application at a port of entry, so your employer's support letter must be complete before you travel. It should state your job title, qualifying USMCA category, degree field, and the specific duties tying the role to that category.
Use Migrate Mate to find biotech employers who sponsor
Filter by TN-eligible roles in biotech and life sciences on Migrate Mate to surface employers already set up for sponsorship. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that have never run a TN filing for a scientific role.
Prepare for consular scrutiny if you hold a Mexican passport
Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a land port, and officers assess specialty occupation fit closely for scientific roles. Bring your degree transcripts, a detailed offer letter, and documentation linking your academic background to the specific research or QA duties in your job description.
Clarify role classification with your hiring manager early
Job titles in biotech vary widely. A Clinical Research Associate and a Research Scientist can both qualify under TN, but under different USMCA categories. Confirm the classification your employer will use before the offer is finalized so your support letter and your I-94 record align.
Biotech TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which TN visa category covers biotech jobs?
Most biotech roles qualify under the USMCA's Scientist category, which covers positions in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and related life sciences. Quality assurance and lab technician roles may qualify under Scientific Technician instead. The specific category must appear on your employer's support letter and match the degree field on your credential.
How does TN compare to H-1B for biotech professionals?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be processed at a port of entry in a single day for Canadians. H-1B visa requires lottery selection, a March registration window, and a six-month wait before the October 1 start date. For a biotech professional with a qualifying degree, TN is a faster and more predictable path if the role fits a USMCA category.
Where can I find biotech employers who offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search biotech and life sciences roles filtered by TN sponsorship. This is the most direct way to identify employers already set up to file TN applications for scientific occupations, rather than applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations during the offer stage.
Can a biotech contractor or CRO role qualify for TN status?
Yes, but the employer of record matters. If you're placed at a client site through a contract research organization, the CRO is typically your TN sponsor. The support letter must reflect the CRO's employer details, not the end client's. Some consular officers and CBP officers scrutinize third-party worksite arrangements, so your job duties and supervision structure should be clearly documented.
What happens to my TN status if my biotech employer is acquired?
If the acquiring company is a successor in interest and your job duties stay substantially the same, you can often continue working without filing a new TN immediately. A formal TN amendment or new filing becomes necessary if your role, location, or employer entity changes materially. Consult USCIS guidance on successor-in-interest rules and get your new employer to confirm the plan before your next international trip.
