Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Chief Technology Officer
Frame your credentials around specialty occupation
CBP officers evaluate whether your degree field directly supports the CTO role. A computer science or engineering degree maps cleanly. An unrelated degree paired with a CTO title triggers scrutiny, so prepare a support letter explaining the academic-to-role connection.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Technology companies experienced with visa sponsorship already have internal HR processes and legal counsel familiar with work visa documentation requirements. Ask recruiters directly whether the company has sponsored work visas for senior technical leadership roles in the past.
Negotiate who covers the filing before accepting
Canadian citizens handle TN admission at the port of entry, which shifts some cost responsibility. Clarify before signing whether the employer will cover attorney fees and any travel costs, since these terms vary significantly across companies and are negotiable at the offer stage.
Use Migrate Mate to identify TN-sponsoring employers
Filtering job listings by TN visa sponsorship availability saves time when targeting CTO roles. Migrate Mate surfaces technology employers actively offering TN sponsorship so you can focus applications on companies already prepared to support the filing process.
Prepare your offer letter to satisfy CBP requirements
The offer letter must specify your job title, duties, required degree, and that the position is full-time permanent employment. Generic executive offer letters frequently lack the technical specificity CBP expects for a senior technology leadership role at the border.
Understand the Mexican consular processing timeline
Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview, which adds weeks to the timeline compared to Canadian port-of-entry processing. Factor this into your start date negotiation, and confirm your employer can accommodate the processing window before you resign from your current position.

Find Chief Technology Officer JobsChief Technology Officer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Chief Technology Officer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but qualification depends on how the role is defined and your degree field. CBP evaluates whether the position requires specialized knowledge in engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline. A CTO role framed around strategic business leadership rather than technical specialty may face more scrutiny than one centered on engineering architecture or systems oversight.
How does TN visa sponsorship for a CTO role compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can file year-round and start as soon as your documentation is approved, sometimes the same day at a port of entry. H-1B requires entering a lottery held once annually, with a typical wait of over a year if selected. For senior technology roles where you have a qualifying offer, TN is significantly faster to execute.
Can I search for CTO jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you filter technology leadership roles by TN visa sponsorship availability, which removes the step of approaching employers who aren't prepared to support the filing. Focusing on employers already familiar with TN requirements reduces the risk of an offer falling through due to unfamiliarity with the process.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for TN status at a CTO level?
Your employer must provide a detailed offer letter stating your job title, a description of duties tied to a qualifying professional category, your required credentials, and confirmation that the position is a full-time arrangement. For a CTO role, the duties section must emphasize technical and engineering responsibilities rather than general executive management to satisfy CBP's specialty occupation standard.
What happens to my TN status if the company is acquired or my role changes?
A significant change in employer, job duties, or position title can invalidate your existing TN status. If your company is acquired and your employment technically transfers to a new legal entity, you may need to reapply at a port of entry or consulate. A title change that moves you further from the technical specialty that supported your original TN approval should be reviewed before the change takes effect.
