Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Construction
Verify your role qualifies under USMCA
TN visas cover specific construction-adjacent titles: civil engineers, urban planners, physicists, and scientific technicians. A general site supervisor or project coordinator role typically won't qualify. Confirm your job title maps to an approved USMCA category before targeting employers.
Gather credential documentation before applying
Border officers and consular officials need proof your degree matches your job title. A civil engineering role requires an engineering degree, not a construction management diploma. Get official transcripts and credential evaluations ready before your first employer conversation.
Target employers with active federal contracts
Federal contractors are required to use E-Verify, which means their HR teams are familiar with work authorization processes. Firms bidding on public infrastructure projects are more likely to have in-house experience handling TN visa paperwork for cross-border hires.
Search for TN-sponsoring construction employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters construction roles by TN visa sponsorship history, saving you the work of cold-screening firms. Search by discipline, such as civil engineering or environmental science, to find employers who have hired Canadian and Mexican professionals before.
Ask employers about their TN letter process upfront
The employer support letter is the document that makes or breaks your TN application at the port of entry or consulate. Ask hiring managers whether they have a template or have issued TN letters before, so you avoid offers that stall during onboarding.
Prepare for port-of-entry processing if you are Canadian
Canadian citizens can apply for TN status directly at a land border or airport without scheduling a consular appointment. Bring your offer letter, degree documents, and professional credentials. CBP officers adjudicate on the spot, so a complete package prevents delays.

Find Construction JobsConstruction TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which construction roles actually qualify for a TN visa?
The TN visa does not cover general construction trades or site management as standalone roles. Qualifying titles in the construction sector are typically civil engineers, geological engineers, environmental scientists, urban planners, and scientific technicians whose work requires a relevant bachelor's degree. If your title is superintendent, estimator, or project manager without an underlying qualifying profession, TN is unlikely to apply without restructuring the role.
How does TN compare to H-1B for construction professionals?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can secure status as soon as an employer issues the support letter. H-1B requires entering a lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection chance and a wait of up to a year before work can begin. For construction professionals in qualifying roles, TN is faster and more predictable, though it does not lead to a green card directly and must be renewed to maintain status.
Can I switch construction employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you must obtain a new TN approval tied to the new employer before starting work there. Canadians can apply at a port of entry with a new employer letter. Mexicans must schedule a new consular appointment. There is no grace period that allows you to work for a new employer while the application is pending, so timing the transition carefully with your hiring manager is important.
How do I find construction employers who will sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter construction and engineering roles by TN visa sponsorship, which surfaces employers who have a demonstrated history of hiring Canadian and Mexican professionals. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to firms that may not understand the TN process or be willing to issue a support letter.
Does my Mexican engineering credential need to be evaluated to qualify?
Yes. Mexican-educated professionals must demonstrate that their degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in the relevant field. A credential evaluation from a recognized evaluation service provides documentation that CBP officers and consular officials rely on when assessing your application. Without it, even a legitimate engineering credential from a Mexican institution may not be accepted at the port of entry or consulate.
