Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a General Contractor
Verify your credential maps to Engineers
TN visa sponsorship for General Contractor roles hinges on the Engineer category. Confirm your degree is in engineering, architecture, or construction management, a trade apprenticeship certificate alone won't satisfy CBP's specialty occupation review at the border.
Target employers with recent visa filings
Focus your search on construction firms with recent visa filings for engineering roles. These employers already understand work visa sponsorship processes and won't need convincing that TN support is feasible for a General Contractor position.
Request a support letter before the border
Your employer's TN support letter must specify your job title as General Contractor, describe daily duties tied to engineering judgment, and confirm you hold a qualifying degree. A vague letter is the most common reason CBP delays or denies entry at the port.
Search TN-ready roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter General Contractor openings by employers with recent visa filings, showing they're experienced with work visa sponsorship. Reaching out to employers with a proven track record of sponsoring professionals cuts the negotiation stage significantly and gets you to a formal offer faster.
Clarify licensure requirements by state early
Several states require a licensed Professional Engineer or General Contractor license before you can legally oversee projects. Confirm the state-level licensing requirement with your prospective employer before accepting an offer, since CBP may ask about it during inspection.
Negotiate TN filing before your start date
Canadian nationals can activate TN status same-day at a land port of entry or pre-clearance airport, so build that timeline into your start date negotiation. Mexican nationals should factor in consular appointment wait times, which can run several weeks depending on the post.

Find General Contractor JobsGeneral Contractor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a General Contractor role actually qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on how the role is structured. TN visa status for General Contractors is granted under the Engineer category, which requires the position to demand a bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management and involve professional engineering judgment. A supervisory or trades-based contractor role without that degree requirement will not qualify. The job offer letter must frame the duties in engineering terms.
How does TN compare to H-1B for General Contractor jobs?
TN has two clear advantages for this role: there is no annual lottery for Canadians, and approval can happen at the port of entry the same day. H-1B requires a lottery selection, a six-month wait until October 1, and USCIS petition processing. For General Contractor roles that fit the TN Engineer category, TN is faster and more predictable. The tradeoff is that TN does not lead directly to a green card the way H-1B can.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that names your position as General Contractor, describes your day-to-day engineering duties, states your degree requirement, confirms the employment is temporary, and includes the employer's contact information. You'll also need to bring your original degree certificate or transcripts. CBP officers at the port of entry review these documents before granting TN status.
Where can I find General Contractor employers that already sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate lets you search General Contractor job listings filtered by employers with verified TN and H-1B sponsorship history. Starting with employers who have filed for work visa holders before avoids the back-and-forth of educating an HR team from scratch. Construction and engineering firms that operate across multiple states tend to have established immigration processes in place.
Can Mexican nationals get TN status for General Contractor roles the same way Canadians can?
No. Canadian citizens present their documents directly at a U.S. port of entry or pre-clearance location and receive TN status on the spot. Mexican nationals must apply through a U.S. consulate in Mexico and attend a visa interview before traveling. Wait times at Mexican consular posts vary by location and season, so Mexican professionals should factor several weeks of processing time into their start date planning.
