Align your credentials to the role
TN visa approval depends on a direct match between your degree or certification and the maintenance job title. An electrical engineering degree supports a maintenance engineering role, but a general trades certificate alone won't qualify. Confirm the credential match before applying.
Target employers with existing TN history
Manufacturing plants, utilities, and facilities management companies regularly sponsor TN workers for maintenance roles. Look for employers with recent visa filings in your target region—their experience with work visa sponsorship suggests they may be open to supporting eligible TN candidates who meet the role requirements.
Request a support letter covering all TN requirements
Your employer's offer letter must specify your job title, duties, salary, and how the role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USMCA. A vague letter is the most common reason CBP delays or denies TN entry for maintenance professionals.
Find TN-ready employers through Migrate Mate
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters maintenance jobs by TN visa eligibility, surfacing companies already set up to hire Canadian and Mexican professionals without the H-1B lottery.
Prepare for CBP scrutiny on specialty occupation
CBP officers frequently question whether maintenance roles meet the specialty occupation standard. Bring your degree transcripts, a detailed duty description, and any professional certifications to your port of entry. A thin file is the fastest route to a secondary inspection.
Understand Mexican applicants face a visa interview step
Mexican nationals can't use the CBP port-of-entry option and must apply through a U.S. consulate, where visa interview wait times and the annual TN allocation for Mexico add steps that Canadian applicants skip entirely. Factor consulate scheduling into your start date negotiation.
Maintenance TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a maintenance job qualify for a TN visa?
It depends on how the role is defined. General maintenance technician or handyman positions typically don't qualify because TN requires a specialty occupation tied to a specific professional credential. Maintenance engineer, facilities engineer, or reliability engineer roles supported by a relevant engineering degree are the strongest fits for TN classification.
How does TN compare to H-1B for maintenance professionals?
TN is significantly faster and more predictable for qualified Canadian and Mexican maintenance engineers. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and CBP can approve TN status at the border on the same day. H-1B requires an employer to file months in advance, and selection isn't guaranteed even for well-qualified candidates.
How do I find employers who will sponsor a TN visa for a maintenance role?
Most employers familiar with TN sponsorship are in manufacturing, energy, or large-scale facilities operations. Migrate Mate lets you filter maintenance jobs specifically by TN visa eligibility, so you're targeting companies already prepared to hire Canadian and Mexican professionals rather than educating employers about the process from scratch.
What documents do I need for TN status as a maintenance professional?
You'll need a valid passport, a detailed employer support letter, proof of citizenship, and your degree or professional credentials showing the direct field match to the role. For maintenance engineering positions, bring official transcripts. CBP can and does request additional documentation at the port of entry, so carry originals, not copies.
Can I switch maintenance employers while on TN status?
Yes, but your TN authorization is tied to the specific employer who sponsored it. You need a new TN approval from CBP or USCIS before starting with a new employer. Canadian nationals can often handle this at a port of entry, while Mexican nationals must return to a U.S. consulate to obtain a new TN visa stamp.
