Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Developer Relations Engineer
Frame your credentials around CS fundamentals
TN approval hinges on your degree matching the Computer Systems Analyst category. A diploma in software engineering, computer science, or information systems strengthens your case far more than a general business or communications degree, even if you've done DevRel work for years.
Target companies with dedicated developer programs
Employers running active developer programs, SDKs, or open-source initiatives are structurally set up to justify DevRel as a technical specialty occupation, which is what CBP officers assess. Prioritize organizations where engineering teams own the DevRel function, not marketing.
Search for TN-sponsored roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by TN visa sponsorship availability, so you spend time on roles where employers already understand the process. Search specifically for Developer Relations Engineer or Developer Advocate listings with TN eligibility confirmed.
Get your offer letter to specify technical duties
The offer letter CBP reviews must describe your role in systems and technical terms, not community or marketing language. Ask your employer to reference duties like API integration support, SDK documentation, and developer tooling evaluation rather than vague advocacy language.
Understand the Mexican TN consular appointment timeline
Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a port of entry, which adds scheduling lead time. Request your employer lock in start dates at least six to eight weeks out so consular appointment availability doesn't compress your onboarding window.
Prepare for CBP questions on technical scope
Canadian applicants applying at the border should expect CBP officers to probe the technical depth of the role. Bring documentation showing code contribution, API documentation authorship, or technical workshop delivery, not just event appearances or social content.

Find Developer Relations Engineer JobsDeveloper Relations Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Developer Relations Engineer role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, if the role is framed under the Computer Systems Analyst TN category and requires a qualifying degree in computer science, engineering, or a closely related technical field. The job duties matter as much as the title. Roles focused on technical integration, SDK support, and developer tooling support qualify more cleanly than roles centered on community management or marketing.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Developer Relations Engineer positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start working as soon as CBP approves your application at a port of entry. H-1B requires winning a lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate and waiting until October 1 to begin work. For Mexicans, TN still skips the lottery but requires a consular appointment. Both visas require employer sponsorship, but TN is faster and more predictable for qualifying roles.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that specifies your job title, the TN category you're entering under, your proposed start date, your salary, and a description of your duties in technical terms. The letter should also confirm your employer's U.S. business address. Canadian citizens present this letter directly to CBP at the border, while Mexican citizens submit it as part of their consulate package.
Can I find Developer Relations Engineer jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings by TN visa sponsorship, so you can identify employers who are already familiar with the process and open to sponsoring Canadian and Mexican professionals. Searching with filters specific to TN eligibility saves time and avoids roles where sponsorship is uncertain or where the employer has never navigated a TN application before.
What happens if my TN application is questioned at the border because DevRel isn't explicitly listed as a TN category?
CBP officers evaluate the substance of the role, not the job title. If your application is questioned, your employer's support letter and your own credentials do the work. A letter that clearly maps your duties to systems analysis, API documentation, or developer tooling and cites your technical degree gives the officer a clear basis for approval. Bring supplementary materials like published technical documentation or code samples to reinforce the technical nature of the position.
