Align your degree to the right TN category
Director of Projects roles can qualify under Engineer or Management Consultant depending on how the employer frames the job duties. Your degree field must match the category your employer selects, so confirm the classification before the offer is written.
Request a project-scope letter from your employer
CBP officers scrutinize Director of Projects titles because the role spans industries. Ask your employer to prepare a support letter detailing the technical or consulting nature of the work, not just your management responsibilities.
Target employers with dedicated immigration teams
Construction, technology, and engineering firms that regularly hire cross-border professionals understand TN visa documentation requirements. Prioritize companies that have in-house HR or legal staff familiar with USMCA filings to avoid delays from employer-side confusion.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-sponsoring employers
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN visa processes. Migrate Mate filters Director of Projects openings by employers who actively sponsor TN visas, so you apply where sponsorship is already understood and expected.
Prepare your credential package before the offer stage
Canadian professionals can be admitted at a land port of entry the same day, so have your degree transcripts, professional designations, and employment letter ready before negotiations close. Delays in document gathering are the most common cause of postponed start dates.
Understand the Mexican consular appointment timeline
Mexican citizens must schedule a visa interview at a U.S. consulate, which can add four to eight weeks to the process. Factor this into your start date negotiations so your employer doesn't mistake the consular wait for a candidate-side issue.
Director Of Projects TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Projects role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, but the qualification depends on how the job duties are framed. USCIS and CBP recognize Engineer and Management Consultant as TN-eligible categories. A Director of Projects role focused on technical project delivery in engineering or IT typically qualifies under Engineer, while a role emphasizing strategic consulting may qualify under Management Consultant. Your degree must align with whichever category your employer claims.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Director of Projects roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be processed at a port of entry the same day. H-1B visa requires surviving a random lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate and a wait of up to a year before you can start. For Director of Projects roles that clearly fit an approved TN category, TN is faster and more predictable than H-1B.
How can I find Director of Projects jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, which means you spend significant time screening out employers who won't sponsor. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and surfaces Director of Projects openings at employers who already understand and support TN sponsorship, reducing the back-and-forth with HR teams unfamiliar with the process.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that specifies your job title, TN category, a description of duties confirming the role qualifies as a specialty occupation, your salary, and the employment start date. For Director of Projects roles, the letter should emphasize the technical or consulting nature of the work rather than general management responsibilities, which are harder to defend at the border or consulate.
Can a Director of Projects role be denied TN status, and what are the common reasons?
Yes. CBP officers can deny TN status if the role appears to be general management without a clear tie to an approved USMCA category, if your degree doesn't match the claimed category, or if the support letter is vague about technical duties. Roles with broad titles like Director of Projects carry higher scrutiny than narrowly defined technical positions. A precise, duty-specific employer letter is the most effective mitigation.
