Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Engineering
Align your credentials to USMCA engineering categories
TN eligibility for engineers requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in the specific engineering discipline matching your role. A civil engineering degree won't support a software engineer TN, so verify the field-to-role match before applying.
Target employers with recent visa sponsorship experience
Engineers pursuing TN status should focus on employers that have recent visa filings — companies that have filed for H-1B, E-3, or green card sponsorship tend to understand immigration processes and are better equipped to write a strong TN support letter. These employers are more likely to understand NAFTA/USMCA specialty occupation standards and less likely to confuse TN requirements with other visa procedures.
Search for engineering TN roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter engineering jobs by TN visa sponsorship. The platform surfaces employers with verified sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with USMCA work authorization for Canadian and Mexican engineers.
Draft a role-specific support letter with your employer
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your engineering duties, confirm the position requires a degree in the relevant engineering field, and state your Canadian or Mexican citizenship. Vague letters are a common reason CBP officers request additional documentation.
Prepare for CBP inspection if you're Canadian
Canadian engineers don't need a visa stamp and can present TN documentation directly at a land border or airport port of entry. Bring your degree transcripts, a detailed offer letter, and the employer support letter to avoid delays at inspection.
Understand Mexico's TN cap before your consulate appointment
Mexico's TN allocation is capped at 5,500 per year under USMCA. Mexican engineers should confirm current cap availability and timeline with their employer before scheduling a U.S. consulate appointment to avoid filing during a cap-exhaustion period.

Find Engineering JobsEngineering TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which engineering disciplines qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
USMCA covers a broad range of engineering fields including agricultural, civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical, mining, nuclear, and petroleum engineering, as well as computer systems analysts and some software engineers. The key requirement is that your degree field directly corresponds to the duties of the role your employer is offering.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for engineering jobs?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at a port of entry the same day for eligible applicants. H-1B requires an annual lottery, a lengthy USCIS petition process, and a start date no earlier than October 1. For Canadian and Mexican engineers, TN is substantially faster and more predictable than competing in the H-1B lottery.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that describes your specific engineering duties, confirms the position requires a degree in the relevant engineering discipline, states the duration and terms of employment, and verifies your Canadian or Mexican citizenship. This letter is the centerpiece of your TN application and must be accurate and detailed.
How can I find engineering employers who are familiar with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search engineering jobs filtered specifically by TN visa sponsorship, surfacing employers with a verified history of sponsoring Canadian and Mexican professionals. This avoids wasting time on applications to employers who don't understand USMCA work authorization or who conflate TN with H-1B requirements.
Can I switch engineering employers while on TN status?
Yes, but your TN authorization is tied to your current employer. To switch, your new employer must issue a TN support letter, and you'll need to obtain new TN status either at a port of entry or through USCIS before starting work. You cannot begin with the new employer on your existing TN approval.
