Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Roadway Engineer
Verify your degree maps to the role
TN visa classification requires your degree field to match the job duties. A civil or transportation engineering degree supports roadway work clearly. A general engineering degree may require a stronger employer letter explaining the connection.
Target DOT contractors and state agencies
Federal Highway Administration-funded projects run through state DOTs and their prime contractors. These employers routinely sponsor TN workers because roadway engineering roles map cleanly to the USMCA Engineer category, reducing internal legal review time.
Request a duties-specific offer letter
Your offer letter must describe roadway engineering duties in technical terms, not just your job title. Specify tasks like horizontal alignment design, drainage analysis, or traffic impact assessments to make the TN category connection explicit for CBP officers.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies actively hiring Roadway Engineers at employers with recent visa filings. Filtering by employers experienced with work visa sponsorship saves time you'd otherwise spend cold-applying to firms unfamiliar with the process.
Prepare your Canadian port-of-entry package carefully
Canadian citizens apply at the border directly. Bring your offer letter, degree transcripts, and any professional engineering license documentation. CBP officers adjudicate on the spot, so a complete, well-organized package prevents same-day delays or denials.
Understand the TN renewal timeline for project-based work
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with unlimited renewals. If your roadway project ends before your TN expires, you'll need a new offer letter from your next employer before USCIS will approve an extension or transfer.
Roadway Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Roadway Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Roadway Engineer roles fall under the USMCA Engineer category, which covers positions requiring a bachelor's degree in civil, transportation, or a closely related engineering field. The job duties must involve engineering-level work such as roadway design, geometric analysis, or infrastructure planning, not general construction supervision or technician-level tasks.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Roadway Engineers?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no lengthy USCIS petition wait for Canadian applicants who qualify at the port of entry. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship through a lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate. For a Canadian or Mexican Roadway Engineer with a qualifying degree, TN is a faster and more predictable path to U.S. employment.
Can I find Roadway Engineer jobs that already support TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Roadway Engineer roles where employers are open to TN visa sponsorship, so you're not spending time on applications that will stall at the visa question. Filtering by TN-familiar employers is especially useful in the transportation and infrastructure sector, where sponsorship experience varies significantly by firm.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead that states your job title, describes your engineering duties with specificity, confirms the position requires a bachelor's degree, and lists your start date and employment terms. For Mexican nationals, the employer will also need to support a consular visa application rather than a port-of-entry process.
Can I switch Roadway Engineer employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you must obtain new TN authorization before starting work with the new employer. Canadian citizens can apply at the border with a new offer letter. Mexican citizens and those already inside the U.S. typically file a change of employer through USCIS. Working for a new employer before approval is a status violation, so timing the transition carefully with your new employer is important.
