Frame your degree around consulting deliverables
TN visa eligibility for business development roles depends on positioning your degree as directly tied to consulting work. A commerce or business administration degree paired with a scope-specific offer letter carries far more weight than a generic sales title.
Target employers with established cross-border operations
Companies already moving personnel between Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. understand TN mechanics and expect to sponsor professionals under USMCA. Their legal teams have filed before, which shortens your onboarding timeline considerably.
Distinguish your role from permanent sales positions
CBP officers flag business development titles that read as ongoing sales employment rather than project-based consulting. Your offer letter should reference specific market expansion objectives or client acquisition mandates with defined timelines, not open-ended revenue targets.
Search for TN sponsorship jobs using Migrate Mate
Filter by TN visa category on Migrate Mate to surface business development roles where employers already understand the Management Consultant classification. Targeting pre-vetted listings saves you from educating hiring managers who've never filed a TN petition.
Prepare a credentials package before final negotiations
Canadians clearing CBP at the port of entry need their degree transcripts, offer letter, and a resume ready on the day of crossing. Mexicans require USCIS approval in advance, so build at least eight to ten weeks into your start date negotiation.
Ask your employer to specify project scope in writing
USCIS and CBP both scrutinize whether business development duties align with Management Consultant criteria. Request that your offer letter name the specific markets, verticals, or client segments you'll be targeting rather than listing general sales responsibilities.
New Business Development TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a New Business Development role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, if the role is structured around consulting-style deliverables rather than ongoing sales employment. CBP and USCIS assess TN petitions for business development titles under the Management Consultant category, which requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and an offer letter that specifies a defined project scope, target market, or strategic mandate rather than open-ended revenue responsibilities.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for New Business Development professionals?
TN is generally faster and more predictable for this role. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and Canadians can gain entry at a port of entry the same day with the right documents. H-1B visa requires a lottery selection in April, USCIS adjudication over several months, and a start date no earlier than October 1. For business development professionals with a qualifying offer and degree, TN is the more direct path.
What should a TN sponsorship offer letter include for this role?
The offer letter needs to name your title, confirm that the position requires a bachelor's degree, specify your citizenship, and describe the work in consulting terms. For New Business Development, that means referencing the markets or client segments you'll develop, the strategic objectives of the engagement, and the expected duration. Generic language about growing revenue or managing a sales pipeline without a defined scope is the most common reason CBP pushes back.
How can I find New Business Development jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by TN visa category to find roles where employers have already committed to sponsoring international professionals under USMCA. That filtering removes the friction of approaching companies that have never filed a TN petition and aren't familiar with the Management Consultant classification that business development roles typically fall under.
Can Mexican professionals get TN status for New Business Development the same way Canadians can?
No. Mexicans can't self-petition at a port of entry. You'll need your employer to file a TN petition with USCIS on your behalf before you can start work, and approval typically takes eight to twelve weeks through standard processing. Canadians can present their documents directly at the border and receive same-day entry if everything is in order. Both paths require the same underlying documentation: a qualifying degree, a compliant offer letter, and a role that maps to the Management Consultant category.
