Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Optometrist
Verify your license transfers across borders
State optometry boards don't automatically recognize Canadian or Mexican credentials. Apply for licensure by endorsement in your target state before approaching employers, since most won't extend a TN offer to an unlicensed candidate.
Target employers with existing TN hiring history
Multi-location optometry chains, hospital-affiliated vision clinics, and large retail optical groups regularly sponsor TN professionals. Use Migrate Mate to filter Optometrist roles by employers who have filed TN-status documentation, saving you from cold outreach to sponsors unfamiliar with the process.
Prepare a specialty occupation support letter
Your employer must provide a letter confirming the role requires a baccalaureate-level optometrist. Ask hiring managers to reference your Doctor of Optometry degree and the state license requirement explicitly. CBP officers at Canadian ports of entry use this letter as their primary adjudication document.
Clarify consulate versus port-of-entry timelines upfront
Canadian citizens apply directly at a U.S. port of entry on their start date, with no prior petition needed. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular appointment, adding weeks to the timeline. Negotiate your start date with your employer based on which pathway applies to your citizenship.
Confirm the employer understands TN renewal requirements
TN status is granted in three-year increments and must be renewed for each new employment period. Ask your prospective employer whether their HR or legal team has handled TN renewals before, since gaps in renewal filing can interrupt your authorization to practice.
Document your OD degree equivalency for Mexican credentials
Mexican optometry graduates often hold a Licenciatura en Optometría. CBP and consular officers evaluate whether this credential is equivalent to a U.S. Doctor of Optometry. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization strengthens your application and reduces the risk of a request for additional evidence.

Find Optometrist JobsOptometrist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does optometrist qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Optometrist is an explicitly named occupation on the USMCA TN qualifying list, which means your employer doesn't need to demonstrate specialty occupation through a separate petition the way H-1B requires. You must hold a Doctor of Optometry degree and an active license in the state where you'll practice.
How does TN visa compare to H-1B for optometrists?
TN is faster, cheaper, and more predictable for optometrists than H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no USCIS petition for Canadian applicants, and approval can happen at the port of entry on day one. H-1B requires surviving a randomized lottery and waiting up to a year before work authorization begins. For a role that qualifies directly under USMCA, TN is the more efficient path.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer provides a signed support letter on company letterhead stating your job title, a description of duties confirming the role requires an optometrist, your anticipated start date, and your compensation terms. For Canadian applicants, this letter is presented at the port of entry. For Mexican nationals, it accompanies your DS-160 application at the U.S. consulate.
Where can I find optometrist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is designed specifically for this search. You can filter Optometrist roles by TN visa sponsorship so you're only seeing employers who understand and support the TN process, rather than applying broadly and asking each employer to consider sponsoring for the first time.
Can Mexican optometrists face additional restrictions under TN?
Mexican TN applicants follow the same occupational criteria as Canadians but must apply through a U.S. consulate rather than at the border. USMCA does not impose a numerical cap on TN status for Mexican nationals by profession, but the consular appointment process adds processing time. Plan for at least several weeks between receiving your job offer and your start date.
