Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Family Medicine Physician
Verify your medical license transfers correctly
Your Canadian or Mexican medical license doesn't automatically satisfy U.S. state requirements. Confirm the hiring state's medical board will recognize your credentials before signing an offer, or your TN visa documentation will be incomplete from the start.
Target hospitals with recent visa sponsorship experience
Large health systems and federally qualified health centers frequently sponsor work visas and have established HR processes for international recruitment. Community hospitals in underserved areas also actively recruit internationally and are often more willing to sponsor than private practices. For TN applicants, this means employers experienced with visa sponsorship are more likely to have the support letter procedures in place to facilitate your port-of-entry application (for Canadian citizens) or consulate application (for Mexican citizens).
Get your offer letter language right
Your employer's offer letter must explicitly state the position is a physician role, not a general 'medical professional' title. CBP officers at the port of entry review this language closely, and a vague job description is a common reason for TN denials.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify Family Medicine Physician roles at employers already set up to handle TN visa sponsorship. Filter by location to target states with shorter medical board processing times, which speeds up your overall timeline.
Understand the Mexican TN cap implications early
Mexican citizens face a 5,500 annual TN allocation, so timing your application matters. File your consular appointment as early as possible after receiving an offer, since peak filing periods in spring and fall can add weeks to scheduling.
Prepare for DEA registration as a separate step
Your employer will need you to hold a DEA registration number before you can prescribe controlled substances. This is a post-offer federal process that runs parallel to TN filing, so don't assume your start date can be immediate after visa approval.
Family Medicine Physician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Family Medicine Physician qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Physicians are explicitly listed as a qualifying TN occupation under the USMCA treaty. Your offer must be for a physician role with a U.S. employer, and you must hold a valid medical degree and applicable licensure. CBP reviews your credentials at the port of entry for Canadians, or at a U.S. consulate for Mexican citizens.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Family Medicine Physicians?
The TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no employer petition required for Canadians applying at the border. H-1B visa requires USCIS processing, lottery selection, and significantly longer lead times. For Family Medicine Physicians with a firm job offer, TN is usually faster and more predictable, though it doesn't offer a direct path to a green card the way H-1B visa does.
What documents do I need to bring to the border for TN approval as a physician?
You'll need your job offer letter specifying the physician role and duration, your medical degree credentials, proof of licensure in the relevant state, and your Canadian passport. Some CBP officers also request a summary of the employer's business. Bring originals and copies of everything, as requirements vary by officer and port of entry.
How can I find Family Medicine Physician jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Family Medicine Physician roles at employers prepared to support TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by role and location helps you focus on health systems and clinics that already understand the TN process, which reduces friction during offer and onboarding.
Can I work for multiple employers on a TN visa as a family physician?
Yes, but each employer requires its own separate TN authorization. If you want to work part-time at two clinics simultaneously, each must sponsor you independently. Canadian citizens can request concurrent TN status at the border with documentation from both employers. Mexican citizens must obtain separate consular approvals for each position.
