Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in OR Tech
Verify your credentials match TN requirements
TN visa eligibility for OR Techs typically hinges on a completed surgical technology program and relevant certification. Gather your transcripts and CST credential before applying. Employers and CBP officers will both check this documentation at intake.
Target hospitals with active surgical programs
Large surgical centers, Level I trauma hospitals, and ambulatory surgery centers run high case volumes and hire OR Techs regularly. These facilities are structured to handle TN sponsorship paperwork and have HR teams familiar with the process.
Request a support letter before your border crossing
Your employer prepares a support letter outlining the role, your qualifications, and how you meet TN requirements. Canadian applicants present this letter at the U.S. port of entry when seeking TN admission. Mexican applicants submit it as part of their consular visa application. Without this documentation, CBP cannot admit you in TN status regardless of your qualifications.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Not every hospital listing an OR Tech role is prepared to sponsor TN status. Search on Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers that have sponsored TN and other work visa categories, so you're targeting facilities that already understand the process.
Clarify your role classification with the hiring manager
OR Tech falls under the medical technologist or similar technician category for TN purposes. Confirm with your prospective employer that the offered job title and duties align with an accepted TN occupation before the offer letter is drafted.
Prepare for status changes if you switch employers
TN status is employer-specific. If you accept a new OR Tech position, your new employer must prepare a fresh support letter for you to present at the U.S. border or consulate. For Canadians, you'll present this letter directly at the port of entry. For Mexicans, you'll apply at a U.S. consulate. You may need to re-enter the country or file a change of status with USCIS before starting work, depending on your circumstances.
OR Tech TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does OR Tech qualify as a TN visa occupation?
OR Tech roles can qualify under the TN visa category when the position aligns with an accepted USMCA professional occupation, most commonly medical technologist or a related technician designation. The specific duties in the offer letter must reflect that classification. CBP makes the final determination at the port of entry or during consular processing for Mexican applicants.
How does TN visa sponsorship for OR Techs compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, which means you can start when you have a job offer rather than waiting for a random selection. H-1B visa requires entering a lottery held once per year, and many OR Techs are not selected. TN is renewable indefinitely in three-year increments, making it a practical long-term option for Canadian and Mexican OR Techs without the uncertainty of the H-1B system.
What documents does my employer need to sponsor my TN visa as an OR Tech?
Your employer needs to draft a support letter describing your OR Tech duties, your TN classification, your credentials, and the employment terms. Canadian applicants present this letter at the port of entry. Mexican applicants submit it as part of the consular visa application. Your employer does not file a petition with USCIS unless you're changing status from inside the U.S.
Where can I find OR Tech jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface U.S. employers with TN and other work visa sponsorship history. Searching there lets you focus on hospitals and surgical facilities that have already navigated the process, rather than applying broadly and discovering after an offer that the employer won't support your visa status.
Can Mexican OR Techs get TN visa sponsorship the same way Canadians can?
Mexican citizens follow a different process. Rather than presenting documents at the border, you apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and must schedule a visa interview. Processing times vary by consulate and appointment availability. The occupational requirements and employer sponsorship obligations are identical to those for Canadian applicants, but the consular step adds time to your start date.
