Verify your provincial license transfers correctly
CBP officers assess whether your Canadian provincial surveying license demonstrates professional standing equivalent to a U.S. Registered Land Surveyor. Bring your license certificate, a credentials summary, and any reciprocity documentation your provincial association provides.
Target firms with active federal contracts
Engineering and surveying firms holding federal land management contracts with agencies like BLM or USACE routinely sponsor TN visa professionals. These employers already navigate federal compliance requirements and are experienced with visa sponsorship processes, making them well-positioned to support TN applicants through the port-of-entry or consulate presentation requirements.
Request a detailed offer letter before filing
Your TN approval depends on the offer letter specifying your role as a Land Surveyor, not a general engineer or technician. A vague title creates CBP scrutiny. Ask the employer to name the position explicitly and describe qualifying surveying duties.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. surveying and civil engineering employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas. Filter by role and location so you're applying to firms already comfortable with visa sponsorship processes, not educating hiring teams from scratch.
Understand the Mexican TN cap timing
Mexico's 5,500 annual TN allocation resets each fiscal year on October 1. If you're a Mexican national applying late in the fiscal year, confirm with USCIS whether the allocation remains open before your employer invests in filing.
Prepare for CBP scrutiny on scope of work
Land Surveyor is a recognized USMCA profession, but CBP officers sometimes challenge whether duties like construction staking or boundary research meet the specialty threshold. Bring a written job description that ties each core duty to your licensed surveying credentials.
Registered Land Surveyor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Registered Land Surveyor qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Land Surveyor is an explicitly listed profession under the USMCA TN category. To qualify, you need a baccalaureate degree in surveying or a related field, or a provincial or state license recognized as equivalent professional standing. Your employer documents the role and your credentials when filing the TN petition with CBP or USCIS.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Registered Land Surveyor positions?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian nationals, and can be approved at the border the same day. H-1B visa requires entering a random lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate. For Canadian surveyors especially, TN is the faster and more predictable path. Mexican nationals face a 5,500 annual TN cap but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
Where can I find employers who sponsor TN visas for land surveyors?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Registered Land Surveyor roles with TN visa sponsorship in the United States. Because TN sponsorship requires employer documentation at filing, targeting firms already familiar with the process saves time and avoids offers that fall through when HR realizes the requirements.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN sponsorship as a land surveyor?
Yes, Mexican nationals qualify for TN status as Land Surveyors under USMCA. Unlike Canadian citizens who receive TN status without a numerical cap, Mexican nationals are subject to a 5,500-per-fiscal-year allocation administered by USCIS. Applications are filed through USCIS rather than at a port of entry, and processing times vary by workload. Apply early in the fiscal year when allocation is less constrained.
What documents does my employer need to file my TN petition?
Your employer prepares a support letter describing your role as a Land Surveyor, your start date, your salary, and your duties tied to the USMCA profession definition. You provide your degree transcripts, provincial or state license, and passport. Canadian nationals can present these documents directly at a U.S. land port of entry for same-day adjudication.
