Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Research Fellow
Align your credentials to TN categories
Research Fellow roles must fit a recognized TN occupation category. Gather transcripts, degree certificates, and publications that tie your academic specialization directly to the research position's scientific or technical field before approaching any employer.
Target institutions with active research funding
Universities, national laboratories, and NIH-funded research centers routinely hire international researchers and understand TN documentation requirements. Prioritize postings that explicitly list research grants or federal funding, which signal established hiring infrastructure for sponsored roles.
Request a detailed employer support letter early
The TN petition lives or dies on the offer letter. Ask the hiring department to specify your title, duties, required degree, and the scientific category your role falls under. A vague letter is the leading cause of CBP delays at the border for Canadian applicants.
Clarify your TN category with the employer's HR team
Research Fellow can map to multiple TN categories depending on your discipline. Mexican nationals, whose consular processing requires precise classification, should confirm in writing which category the employer is sponsoring before submitting any documents to the consulate.
Use Migrate Mate to find Research Fellow roles with sponsorship
Filter your job search to employers experienced with visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces Research Fellow positions from institutions with recent visa filings, helping you identify roles at organizations familiar with sponsoring work visas. For TN visa eligibility, you'll need a job offer, relevant degree, and your employer's support letter—which you'll present at the U.S. port of entry (for Canadians) or U.S. consulate (for Mexicans).
Prepare for secondary inspection if entering at the border
Canadian applicants processing TN status at a land port or airport should carry printed copies of all supporting documents. CBP officers conduct on-site adjudication, and incomplete packets commonly result in secondary inspection or same-day denial without right of appeal.

Find Research Fellow JobsResearch Fellow TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Research Fellow role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, if your role fits a recognized USMCA professional category. Research Fellows typically qualify under the Scientific Technician/Technologist or Scientific Research categories, depending on your discipline and duties. Your employer's offer letter must explicitly tie your job responsibilities and required degree to one of these categories for CBP or the consulate to approve your TN status.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for Research Fellow positions?
The TN has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for Canadian citizens, so there's no registration gamble the way there is with H-1B. Canadian applicants can receive TN status the same day at a port of entry. The trade-off is that TN requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship, does not carry dual-intent protections, and must be renewed indefinitely rather than converting to a green card pathway directly.
What documents does a Research Fellow need for TN visa processing?
You need a valid passport, a qualifying job offer letter from the U.S. institution, and evidence of your credentials. That typically means academic transcripts, your degree certificate, and relevant publications or a CV demonstrating your research specialization. Mexican nationals also need to schedule a consular appointment and complete the DS-160 application before any documents are submitted.
Can I search for Research Fellow jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Research Fellow positions from employers with a confirmed history of TN visa sponsorship, so you're not spending time on roles where the institution is unfamiliar with the process or unwilling to provide the required support letter and documentation.
How long does TN visa processing take for a Research Fellow position?
Canadian citizens applying at a U.S. port of entry can receive a decision the same day, provided all documents are in order. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate, where processing typically runs a few business days to several weeks depending on consulate workload and whether administrative processing is triggered. Neither route involves the multi-month waits common with H-1B petitions.
