The UConn Health Sciences Library presents an exciting opportunity for a full-time Librarian 3 - User Experience Librarian to join our team. This is a new position in the Systems and Technology Department, and the individual in this role will report to the Department Head.
The Librarian 3 - User Experience Librarian leads the design and continuous improvement of internal library systems and workflows to enhance efficiency, usability, and staff experience through the application of user-centered design principles. This role evaluates and optimizes library tools, conducts usability testing and workflow assessments, translates staff needs into system requirements, and supports system implementations and integrations. The position also advances the strategic use of AI, by identifying opportunities for adoption, guiding responsible use, and training staff to improve productivity and workflow effectiveness.
At the UCHC, this class is accountable for acting as a working lead for professional and other staff members engaged in library tasks, or performs complex specialist duties, as a Department Head.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Systems and Technology.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May lead/supervise lower rank library staff members as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Analyze and improve internal library workflows and systems across the library to increase efficiency, consistency, and usability, applying UX principles such as usability, accessibility, and human-centered design.
- Evaluate staff-facing tools (e.g., ILS, discovery platforms, interlibrary loan systems, etc.) to identify usability issues and friction points, and implement enhancements, integrations, and automation opportunities.
- Lead usability testing, workflow audits, and system evaluations with internal users to inform continuous system and process improvements.
- Translate staff needs into functional system requirements and advocate for system enhancements, integrations, and improvements.
- Monitor system performance, workflow efficiency, and staff feedback to proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues.
- Lead or contribute to system migrations, upgrades, and implementations with a focus on improving staff experience and workflow effectiveness.
- Identify, evaluate, and implement AI tools to streamline internal workflows, collaborate with vendors on integration, develop guidelines for responsible use (including privacy, bias, and security), and train staff on effective adoption.
- Stay current on emerging library technologies, UX practices, and AI trends to support continuous improvement and innovation.
- Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
- Ability to analyze, map, and improve complex workflows and systems to increase efficiency, consistency, and usability across library operations.
- Knowledge of integrated library systems (ILS), discovery platforms, interlibrary loan systems, and related technologies (including configuration and optimization), with experience using Ex Libris Alma and Primo, Springshare LibApps, and Aurora WordPress.
- Knowledge of user experience (UX) principles, including human-centered design, usability, and accessibility standards, applied to library systems and tools.
- Ability to translate staff needs into functional system requirements and troubleshoot system and workflow issues to implement sustainable solutions.
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to prioritize, coordinate, and lead cross-functional initiatives, and collaborate effectively across departments.
- Ability to design, document, and standardize workflows and best practices in clear, usable formats, and develop and deliver training for staff with varying technical expertise.
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to learn and apply new technologies, with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and awareness of emerging trends.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
General Experience:
A Master's Degree in library science from a school accredited by the American Library Association, plus three (3) years of relevant professional library experience in a health science setting.
Special Experience:
Two (2) years of General Experience must have involved the performance of professional library tasks at or above the level of Librarian 11.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of one or more structured programming languages (e.g., Ruby, Python, Perl).
- Experience with Cloud Computing environment (MS Azure).
- Hands-on experience of web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript/JQuery, XML/XSLT, JSON, Angular.
- Understanding of Web Services such as REST, SOAP, and other XML-based APIs, experience of integrating multiple software or services via APIs.
- Experience working with relational databases.
- Experience with EZproxy, OpenAthens, Shibboleth, Entra, ADFS or other authentication systems and protocols.
SCHEDULE: Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
