JOB SUMMARY AND QUALIFICATIONS
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Responsible for leadership of the Anesthesia Service line and operations across assigned divisions. Key responsibilities include oversight of financial performance, development and stabilization of new and existing programs, management of personnel, implementation of strategic initiatives, and execution of business development activities. This role drives operational excellence by aligning best practices with enterprise goals and optimizing outcomes across the anesthesia continuum.
The role includes assessment and consulting services for non-managed programs and the creation of scalable solutions to support sustainable growth as well as direct management of incoming new programs. Serves as a subject matter expert for anesthesia operations and is responsible for developing business models, implementation frameworks, and performance monitoring systems to enhance clinical, financial, and operational results.
Works in collaboration with Group, Division, and facility CEOs, CMOs, CFOs, and other senior leaders across HCA to advance enterprise-wide anesthesia strategy, execution, and growth.
SUPERVISOR: President of Anesthesia Service Line
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
Leadership
- Provides leadership across anesthesia services, operations, compliance, and expense management to drive alignment with HCA’s strategic plan.
- Leads the launch and operationalization of new anesthesia programs, including staffing models, workflow integration, onboarding, and post-launch stabilization.
- Identifies underperforming operations and designs turnaround plans in collaboration with local and enterprise teams.
- Establishes performance dashboards, benchmarks, and KPIs to ensure sustainable operations post-implementation.
- Partners with facility and division leadership to scope, plan, and implement new anesthesia services or expansions, including support for physician recruitment and infrastructure development.
- Develops go-to-market strategies and supports growth of service line through internal partnerships and relationship development.
- Cultivates a culture of performance, innovation, and accountability across the service line.
- Builds relationships with senior executives (CMO, CFO, COO, etc.) by discussing industry trends, operational best practices, and aligning on strategic priorities.
- Mentors and develops facility and division anesthesia leaders to build capability and leadership succession.
Business Development & Strategic Execution
- Leads strategic assessments and due diligence processes for potential anesthesia program growth opportunities (including new hospital contracts, joint ventures, and practice acquisitions).
- Collaborates with HCA’s Physician Resource Team (PRT) to analyze market dynamics, evaluate ROI, and prepare pro forma and capital planning for anesthesia service line expansion.
- Supports integration planning for acquired or contracted groups including alignment of clinical models, billing, compliance, and performance goals.
- Builds relationships with physician practices and external stakeholders to facilitate service line expansion and integration.
- Acts as executive liaison to external partners and stakeholders as needed for program success.
Implementation & Stabilization
- Oversees cross-functional implementation teams during launch and transition phases of new anesthesia programs.
- Assists in the development of scalable playbooks and implementation toolkits to guide field operations through start-up and stabilization phases.
- Leads root cause analyses and rapid cycle improvement initiatives when performance gaps are identified in anesthesia operations.
- Ensures a smooth transition to steady-state operations, with hand-off plans and ongoing monitoring protocols for sustained success.
Customer Service
- Maintains strong stakeholder relationships through clear, proactive communication and collaboration.
- Proactively addresses stakeholder needs, aligns on expectations, and incorporates feedback into service enhancements.
- Builds internal customer confidence and commitment to service excellence.
Financial
- Drives achievement of financial goals by establishing service line and facility-level budgets, managing expenses, and identifying efficiency opportunities.
- Leads financial modeling and scenario planning to evaluate new opportunities or programmatic changes.
- Develops financial and operational KPIs, tracks progress, and leads corrective action planning when necessary.
Project Management
- Manages concurrent large-scale initiatives, balancing timelines, budgets, and stakeholder expectations.
- Delegates effectively to direct reports and matrixed teams to execute service line initiatives.
General Knowledge and Competencies
- Deep understanding of anesthesia and hospital operations, including financial, regulatory, and compliance dimensions.
- Strong interpersonal and executive communication skills.
- Comfortable with travel, matrixed reporting structures, and fast-paced environments.
- Able to lead complex change initiatives and cross-functional teams with accountability and clarity.
- Practices and adheres to the Code of Conduct philosophy, mission and vision statements.
Education:
- Bachelors Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or Nursing – Required
- Masters Degree in Business or Healthcare Administration, or a related clinical or operational field e.g. PA, Pharmacy, Nursing Public Health, etc., is Required.
Experience:
- 12+ years of experience in healthcare systems, anesthesia operations, or consulting with a minimum of 7 years of experience at the Director level or higher.
- Proven experience in business development, clinical implementation, and service stabilization within a healthcare or hospital system.
- Strong working knowledge of Health Systems Management, Hospital Operations, Practice Management, Revenue Cycle, and strategic growth frameworks.
