Most candidates build from manager to director to senior director before reaching the VP level, typically within industries like technology, entertainment, or consumer goods where California employers concentrate. An MBA from a California business school can accelerate the timeline, and a portfolio of measurable campaign results or brand growth is what California hiring teams weight most heavily at this level.
How much do vice president of marketings make in California?
Vice president of marketings in California earn a median of about $193,620 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $104,370 for the lowest 10% to over $326,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.

California's concentration of technology headquarters, entertainment studios, and consumer brands makes it one of the deepest markets in the country for senior marketing leadership roles.
Which California cities have the most vice president of marketing jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Mountain View account for the most vice president of marketing openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its density of entertainment studios, consumer brands, and agency headquarters, while San Francisco and the broader Bay Area draw volume from technology companies and venture-backed startups that consistently hire at the VP level as they scale their go-to-market functions.

About 78% of vice president of marketing openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the marketing function's strong compatibility with distributed work. Brand strategy, performance marketing oversight, and cross-functional planning are the areas most commonly done fully remote, while roles tied to events, product launches, or studio-based creative tend to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a vice president of marketing in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a marketing coordinator or specialist role at a California technology company or consumer brand and building upward through demonstrated results rather than tenure. Large California employers like those in the Bay Area tech corridor frequently promote from within, so joining at the associate or manager level with a clear growth track is more effective than waiting for VP-level experience. A strong portfolio of measurable outcomes, even from smaller campaigns, combined with exposure to marketing automation platforms and analytics tools, gives candidates a meaningful edge when competing for their first senior role in California's market.
