Sales Executive Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sales executive in California?
Most sales executive roles in California require a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field, though the path varies by industry. In regulated sectors such as financial services, candidates must obtain FINRA licensing, such as the Series 65 or Series 7, through FINRA-administered exams. Life sciences sales roles often require deep product knowledge validated through formal onboarding programs at California-based employers. Starting as an account representative or business development representative at a California company is the most common entry point into the career.
How much do sales executives make in California?
Sales executives in California earn a median of about $134,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,430 for the lowest 10% to over $300,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sales executives in California?
Employers hiring sales executives in California right now include Paychex, T-Mobile, and Siemens, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, life sciences firms, and financial institutions means demand is consistent across both established corporations and growth-stage companies throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most sales executive jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most sales executive openings in California, reflecting the concentration of technology and SaaS companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, the entertainment, media, and commercial real estate markets in Los Angeles, and the large medical device and defense contractors anchored in San Diego. These metros collectively account for the bulk of enterprise and mid-market sales hiring in the state.
Are there remote sales executive jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 66% of sales executive openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the role, including prospecting, virtual demos, and pipeline management, can be done off-site. The portions most likely to remain in-person are enterprise client meetings, trade show coverage, and territory-based field sales in industries such as commercial real estate and medical devices.
How can I get hired as a sales executive in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a business development representative or sales development representative role at a California technology or SaaS company, where structured training programs are common. Large California employers such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Workday run formal sales associate programs designed for candidates without direct quota-carrying experience. Lateral moves from customer success, account management, or retail sales are also well-recognized pathways. Completing a FINRA licensing exam if you are targeting financial services, or earning a life sciences product certification for medical device roles, gives candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to sales executive jobs in California?
