Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
ROLE SUMMARY:
This role will lead the electrical systems definition and analysis for Rivian’s next-generation electrical system platform. You will support the electrical system from early-stage development through final manufacturing validation. You will develop electrical system requirements and establish traceability through multiple layers of hardware and software. This is a hands-on and wide-ranging role that will work across the entire vehicle design. Extreme curiosity, excellent communication, proactive problem solving, and “white-box” engineering principles are critical to success in this role.

- Collaborate with manufacturing and supply chain teams to incorporate high-rate process requirements into the system design
- Own and maintain essential technical documentation, including schematics, manuals, specifications, and test reports
- Decompose the electrical system design into subsystem requirements. Collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate the subsystems together with the electrical system.
- Perform and document Failure Mode and Effects Analyses and incorporate mitigations into the electrical system design
- Analyze the electrical system to ensure it meets safety-critical design requirements
- Collaborate with systems test engineers to develop a validation test program and review test reports to verify design conformance
- Investigate hardware and software issues to identify their root cause and develop corrective actions to prevent issue recurrence
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering: Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Aerospace, or similar field
- 5+ years of experience with systems development and analysis of integrated hardware & software systems, including HARA and/or DFMEA
- Excellent electrical engineering fundamentals
- Familiarity with ISO 26262 or similar functional safety standards (e.g. ARP4754)
- Familiarity with autonomous vehicle sensor and sensor cleaning technologies
- Experience leading multidisciplinary trade studies to conclusion
- Experience with planning, writing, and executing test procedures
- Ability to read wiring schematics and interact with CAD software

Which companies sponsor visas for electrical systems engineers in California?
Defense and aerospace contractors are among the most active sponsors in California, including Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Technologies, and Lockheed Martin, primarily in Southern California. In the Bay Area, companies like Apple, Tesla, and NVIDIA regularly sponsor electrical systems engineers. Utilities such as Pacific Gas and Electric also hire in this space, though sponsorship practices vary by role and project.
Which visa types are most common for electrical systems engineer roles in California?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for electrical systems engineers in California, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Some engineers from Canada or Mexico may qualify under the TN visa. Candidates with extraordinary achievements may also be considered for the O-1A. Each path depends on the employer's sponsorship infrastructure and the specific role's requirements.
Which cities in California have the most electrical systems engineer sponsorship jobs?
San Jose and the broader Bay Area lead in sponsorship volume, supported by semiconductor, EV, and clean energy employers. Los Angeles and the Inland Empire are active due to aerospace and defense contractors. San Diego has a strong concentration driven by defense technology and biomedical device firms. Sacramento sees demand tied to utility infrastructure and state energy projects, particularly around grid modernization.
How to find electrical systems engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it easier to identify California employers actively hiring electrical systems engineers who need work authorization. Rather than sorting through thousands of general postings, you can focus on roles where sponsorship is already confirmed. Migrate Mate covers positions across defense, semiconductor, utility, and EV sectors, which are the industries most likely to sponsor this role in California.
Are there state-specific considerations for electrical systems engineers seeking sponsorship in California?
California has a high prevailing wage tier under Department of Labor guidelines, which means employers must pay competitive wages to satisfy H-1B requirements in metro areas like San Francisco and San Jose. Defense-sector roles may also require security clearances, which can complicate or limit sponsorship for some foreign nationals. California's strong university pipeline through UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC means employers often recruit internationally trained engineers directly from graduate programs.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored electrical systems engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
