DESCRIPTION
Do you enjoy working on large-scale distributed systems? Do you want to influence how the world interacts with and analyzes large data sets across a number of industries and use cases? AWS EMR Control Plane team is looking for smart engineers to work on scaling a heavily used AWS Service. If you want to work with a team solving some of the most interesting challenges in distributed systems, building solutions for large scale problems, please talk to us!
Amazon EMR is the industry leading cloud-native big data platform for processing vast amounts of data quickly and cost-effectively at scale. Using open source tools such as Apache Spark, Apache Hive, Apache HBase, Apache Flink, and Presto, coupled with the dynamic scalability of Amazon EC2 and scalable storage of Amazon S3, EMR gives analytical teams the engines and elasticity to run Petabyte-scale analysis for a fraction of the cost of traditional on-premises clusters.
We are developing innovative new features including our next-generation cluster management system, improvements for real-time processing of big data, and ways to enable customers to more easily interact with their data.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from senior and principal engineers who are domain experts at AWS. You will be part of a collaborative and growing team working on complex problems for a successful and long-running product. You will have an opportunity to learn and influence how our customers use EMR for a wide variety of use cases. You will get to work with a lot of AWS stack – DynamoDB, Lambdas, API Gateway, CloudFormation, EC2, etc. (Where can you learn AWS technologies better than at AWS itself?)
We don’t need you to be an expert in distributed systems as you will have a chance to learn with your team, although a good understanding of the basics will help you ramp up. We value engineers who love what they do and are passionate about their work. We appreciate curiosity and craftsmanship over knowledge in certain frameworks.
Use and knowledge of GenAI tooling will be a plus.

Which e-commerce companies in California sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas?
Companies with documented LCA filing histories in California's e-commerce space include Amazon (with major operations in the Los Angeles and Bay Area), Poshmark (headquartered in Redwood City), and Chewy's California-based tech teams. Marketplace platforms and fulfillment technology companies across Southern California and Silicon Valley also appear regularly in DOL disclosure data for STEM-eligible roles in engineering, analytics, and product development.
Which cities in California have the most e-commerce F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Los Angeles leads in e-commerce sponsorship volume, driven by direct-to-consumer brands, marketplace startups, and fashion-tech companies concentrated in the LA tech corridor. The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose and Redwood City, follows closely, anchored by established marketplace platforms. San Diego has a smaller but growing cluster of e-commerce logistics and analytics employers that hire international graduates on STEM OPT.
What types of e-commerce roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that most consistently qualify include software engineering, data science, machine learning engineering, UX research, and supply chain analytics. These positions generally require degrees in computer science, information systems, data analytics, or engineering, all STEM-designated fields under the DHS STEM OPT extension list. Roles in digital marketing or general operations are less likely to qualify unless tied to a STEM-designated degree program and job function.
How do I find e-commerce F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters e-commerce job listings specifically by F-1 STEM OPT eligibility and California location, showing employers with verified LCA filing histories in the sector. This lets you focus on companies that have already demonstrated a willingness to sponsor international graduates rather than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after the fact. You can filter by city, role type, and employer sponsorship record directly on the platform.
Are there California-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in e-commerce?
California employers must comply with state labor law in addition to DOL prevailing wage requirements, which can affect how compensation and classification are structured for STEM OPT workers. California's strong worker-protection framework means employers are generally experienced with documentation requirements. For e-commerce companies using hybrid or remote models, confirm that your designated work location is California-based, since your STEM OPT authorization and employer's E-Verify enrollment must align with where you physically perform work.
