INTRODUCTION
Booking Holdings (NASDAQ: BKNG) is the world's leading provider of online travel and related services, provided to consumers and local partners in more than 220 countries and territories through five primary consumer-facing brands: Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, KAYAK and OpenTable. The mission of Booking Holdings is to make it easier for everyone to experience the world. For more information, visit BookingHoldings.com and follow us on X (formerly known as Twitter) @BookingHoldings.
This role is eligible for our hybrid work model: Two days in-office.
This role is eligible to be based in either of our New York, NY or Norwalk, CT offices.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Tax Consultant specializing in U.S. State & Local Indirect Taxes to support our expanding U.S. tax footprint. This is an important, cross-brand role within the Booking Holdings, Inc. (BHI) organization. You will not be dedicated to a single brand; instead, you will serve as a central technical resource supporting our portfolio of global brands, including Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, KAYAK, and OpenTable. This role requires the ability to navigate diverse business models — from travel marketplaces and digital advertising to restaurant technology — and apply U.S. state and local tax rules in a practical, business-focused manner. You will conduct multi-state research, analyze complex fact patterns across multiple entities, and help ensure that tax positions are defensible and, where appropriate, aligned across the BHI Group. The role involves hands-on execution and independent first-level technical analysis and judgment, with appropriate escalation. Responsibilities include interpreting legislation, assessing downstream system implications (including Avalara configurations), and preparing structured technical analyses and documentation for senior review. While the role does not establish final tax policy, it is expected to independently develop well-reasoned, defensible first-level conclusions and identify areas requiring escalation.
YOUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In this role you will get to:
- Centralized Compliance Support: Perform hands-on review and resolution of complex U.S. indirect tax issues within Avalara across multiple brand entities, including configuration differences, tax code application, exemption logic, and transaction-level anomalies.
- U.S. SALT Technical Support & Alignment: Provide technical and interpretive support on U.S. state and local tax matters (sales/use, lodging/occupancy, gross receipts), helping ensure consistent application of tax rules across brand-owned revenue and product models.
- Cross-Brand Indirect Tax Advisory: Support analysis of indirect tax considerations for new business initiatives, helping align brand-level positions with the Group’s broader tax strategy and risk framework.
- Harmonized Risk Management: Collaborate across brands to identify technical inconsistencies and potential risks. Independently perform impact analyses and prepare defensible first-level technical conclusions for leadership review.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare business-focused tax requirements, memoranda, and guidance materials that help stakeholders across brands and functions (Finance, Legal, Product) understand and consistently apply applicable tax rules.
- Audit Defense & Response: Support the preparation of technical responses to U.S. state tax inquiries and audits for BHI and, upon request and coordination with brand tax teams, for brand entities. Responsibilities include research, data analysis, and documentation to help ensure responses and positions are technically sound and aligned with BHI Group positions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What you have:
- Experience at a Big 4 or top-tier consulting firm preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency and hands-on experience in researching U.S. state and local tax laws and interpreting their application across diverse jurisdictions and various product models.
- Hands-on experience analyzing system-driven tax determination tools (e.g., Avalara, AvaTax, Returns, or similar) and resolving configuration discrepancies, ideally in a multi-entity environment.
- Strong ability to interpret ambiguous state tax guidance, develop practical applications, draft technical memoranda, and translate tax law into clear business and system requirements, with appropriate guidance and review.
- Licensed CPA, JD, or Master’s in Taxation preferred.
- Solid working knowledge of state and local tax law, with a focus on indirect tax; experience supporting multiple legal entities or business units preferred.
- Experience supporting technology-driven or marketplace business models preferred.
- Strong analytical skills to identify challenges, propose solutions, and help resolve issues in a timely manner.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to discuss highly technical issues.
- Positive attitude and dependable team player with strong attention to detail.

Which companies sponsor visas for tax consultants in Connecticut?
The most active visa sponsors for tax consultants in Connecticut include Big Four firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG) with offices in Hartford and Stamford, as well as regional accounting firms and large insurers like The Hartford and Aetna. Financial services and professional services companies along the Stamford-Greenwich corridor also have established sponsorship programs for qualified tax professionals.
Which visa types are most common for tax consultant roles in Connecticut?
The H-1B is the most common visa for tax consultants in Connecticut, given that tax consulting typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field. Candidates with advanced credentials may also qualify for the O-1A for extraordinary ability, and some roles at multinational firms may support L-1B specialized knowledge transfers for existing employees relocating from abroad.
How to find tax consultant visa sponsorship jobs in Connecticut?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship, so you can search tax consultant roles in Connecticut without sifting through positions that don't support international candidates. Focus your search on Hartford and Stamford, where financial services and professional services employers are concentrated. Migrate Mate also surfaces which employers have a documented history of sponsoring H-1B petitions for tax and accounting roles.
Which cities in Connecticut have the most tax consultant sponsorship jobs?
Hartford and Stamford are Connecticut's primary markets for sponsored tax consultant roles. Hartford hosts major insurance and financial services headquarters, creating steady demand for tax compliance and advisory professionals. Stamford, with its proximity to New York City, attracts multinational corporations and investment firms that regularly sponsor H-1B workers in tax and finance functions. New Haven also has some activity, particularly tied to university-adjacent professional services.
Are there state-specific considerations for tax consultants seeking sponsorship in Connecticut?
Connecticut's concentration of insurance and financial services employers means tax consultants with expertise in insurance taxation, investment fund tax, or multistate compliance are particularly competitive for sponsored roles. The state's prevailing wage requirements for H-1B petitions are benchmarked to the Hartford and Bridgeport-Stamford metropolitan areas, so salaries at sponsoring employers must meet Department of Labor wage levels for the specific tax consultant role and location.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored tax consultant jobs in Connecticut?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
