Which companies sponsor visas for electrical engineers in Hawaii?
Defense contractors with a significant presence near Pearl Harbor and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, including Booz Allen Hamilton, SAIC, and Leidos, regularly sponsor electrical engineers. Hawaiian Electric, the state's primary utility, has historically filed H-1B visa petitions for power systems and grid engineering roles. Federal agencies also hire through contractor pipelines, and some positions may require security clearance eligibility.
Which visa types are most common for electrical engineers in Hawaii?
The H-1B is the most common visa for electrical engineers in Hawaii, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Candidates from Australia may pursue the E-3 visa, and those from Canada or Mexico may qualify under TN visa status. Some defense-adjacent roles may have citizenship or clearance requirements that limit sponsorship options.
Which cities in Hawaii have the most electrical engineer sponsorship jobs?
Honolulu accounts for the large majority of electrical engineer visa sponsorship activity in Hawaii, driven by its concentration of defense contractors, federal installations, and Hawaiian Electric's headquarters. The Pearl City and Aiea corridors, close to Pearl Harbor, are also active hiring areas for defense-related engineering roles. Hilo and Kailua-Kona see occasional openings tied to utility infrastructure and renewable energy projects on the Big Island.
How to find electrical engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Hawaii?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S., including electrical engineer roles in Hawaii. You can filter directly by state and role to see companies that have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. This saves time compared to manually researching each employer's past H-1B filings. Migrate Mate focuses exclusively on sponsorship-willing employers, which matters especially in a smaller market like Hawaii.
Are there any state-specific considerations for electrical engineers seeking sponsorship in Hawaii?
Hawaii requires electrical engineers to hold a Professional Engineer license issued by the Hawaii Board of Professional Engineers for certain regulated project types, which is separate from your visa status. DOL prevailing wage requirements for H-1B petitions in Hawaii reflect the Honolulu metropolitan area, which generally sets higher benchmarks than many mainland markets. Hawaii's distance from the continental U.S. also means a smaller overall job market, so candidates benefit from targeting employers with established sponsorship track records.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored electrical engineer jobs in Hawaii?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
