THE WORK:
As a Staff Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure, you will own Ripple's cloud platform strategy across Azure and AWS — defining the reference architectures, governance policies, and engineering standards that enable teams to build and ship reliably at scale. You will sit at the intersection of engineering, security, product, and finance to drive FinOps practices, lead technical build reviews, and ensure infrastructure is built into the solution lifecycle from day one. Beyond the technical, you will mentor engineers, shape hiring, and serve as the principal authority teams turn to when platform decisions matter most. If you want to drive the cloud foundation behind the future of global financial infrastructure, this role is for you.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Take ownership of and lead the cloud infrastructure platform strategy and multi-quarter roadmap across engineering teams.
- Serve as the principal infrastructure authority on platform architecture, cloud patterns, and engineering standards.
- Define reference architectures and reusable infrastructure models that empower engineering teams to build and ship reliably at scale.
- Partner with product and engineering leadership to ensure infrastructure capabilities are built early in the solution lifecycle.
- Take responsibility for the security stance of the cloud infrastructure platform in collaboration with the security team.
- Define and enforce cloud governance policies, tagging standards, access controls, and architectural guardrails.
- Take responsibility for FinOps methods related to the cloud platform, delivering insights and suggestions to engineering and finance leadership.
- Build and maintain production-quality internal platform tooling and automation across Azure and AWS.
- Direct the assessment and incorporation of new infrastructure technologies, take part in the on-call rotation, and apply production experience to guide platform enhancements.
- Proactively identify and resolve technical conflicts and priority misalignments across teams; lead technical build reviews.
- Guide Senior and mid-level engineers, take an active role in the hiring process, and foster a culture of knowledge sharing.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Hands-on proficiency in Infrastructure as Code, especially Terraform.
- Strong software engineering skills with proficiency in Python, Go, PowerShell, and/or Bash.
- Proven experience owning cloud security and governance in a regulated environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading FinOps practices and communicating findings to leadership.
- Track record of defining and accomplishing multi-quarter infrastructure roadmaps.
- Experience serving as a principal technical authority and setting engineering standards.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills.
- Experience taking part in on-call rotations and applying that exposure to guide platform decisions.
- A strong approach to mentorship and talent development.
- Ideally, experience in financial services or another highly regulated industry.

Which companies sponsor visas for cloud software engineers in Illinois?
Major Illinois employers with consistent cloud software engineer sponsorship histories include Morningstar, Motorola Solutions, United Airlines, Walgreens Boots Alliance, and Allstate. Chicago's financial technology sector, including firms like Enova and Avant, also files H-1B visa petitions for cloud roles. Enterprise consulting firms such as Accenture and Infosys, both with large Illinois offices, are among the highest-volume sponsors statewide for cloud engineering positions.
Which visa types are most common for cloud software engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for cloud software engineers in Illinois, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. The L-1B intracompany transfer visa is also relevant for engineers moving from a foreign office of a multinational employer. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA successor agreement.
How to find cloud software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse cloud software engineer roles in Illinois without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. You can narrow results by location, including Chicago and surrounding metro areas, and by cloud-specific skills or seniority. This saves significant time compared to manually screening general job postings to determine which employers are open to sponsoring international candidates.
Which cities in Illinois have the most cloud software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of cloud software engineer sponsorship opportunities in Illinois, particularly in the Fulton Market, the Loop, and the River North tech corridors. The northern suburbs, including Schaumburg, Deerfield, and Lisle, also host significant employer concentrations in enterprise software and telecommunications. Champaign-Urbana, home to the University of Illinois, has a smaller but growing cluster tied to university research spinoffs and nearby tech employers.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for cloud software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Illinois employers filing H-1B petitions for cloud software engineers must pay the Department of Labor's prevailing wage for the specific role and location, which is determined by the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan statistical area for most positions in the metro. Illinois has a deep university pipeline, particularly from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University, meaning employers in the state are generally experienced with OPT-to-H-1B transitions for graduating international students in computer science and engineering disciplines.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored cloud software engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
