Search Consultant Jobs in IllinoisConsultant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies sponsor visas for consultants in Illinois?
Large consulting firms with significant Illinois operations are the most active sponsors, including Accenture, Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, and McKinsey, all of which maintain substantial Chicago offices. Technology companies like Salesforce and SAP also sponsor consultants for implementation and advisory roles. Financial institutions headquartered in Chicago, such as United Airlines and Morningstar, regularly sponsor management and strategy consultants as well.
Which visa types are most common for consultant roles in Illinois?
The H-1B visa is the most widely used visa for consultant roles in Illinois, as consulting positions in management, technology, and finance typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. The L-1A and L-1B are common for consultants transferring from an overseas office of a multinational firm. The O-1 visa is occasionally used for consultants with demonstrated extraordinary expertise.
Which cities in Illinois have the most consultant sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of consultant sponsorship jobs in Illinois, particularly in the downtown Loop and surrounding neighborhoods like River North and the Fulton Market District. The North Shore suburbs, including Evanston and Deerfield, have a smaller but active cluster of corporate headquarters that hire consultants. Outside the Chicago metro, consultant sponsorship opportunities are limited.
How to find consultant visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse consultant roles in Illinois without sorting through postings that don't offer sponsorship. You can narrow results by location, role type, and visa category. Given that Chicago's consulting market is competitive, focusing your search on firms with a documented history of H-1B or L-1 visa filings for consultant titles is a practical starting point.
Are there state-specific considerations for consultants seeking visa sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois does not impose state-level visa sponsorship requirements beyond federal standards, but employers must comply with Department of Labor prevailing wage rules for the Chicago metropolitan area, which are updated periodically and reflect the city's competitive professional services market. Consultants affiliated with Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, or University of Illinois at Chicago sometimes leverage Optional Practical Training before pursuing H-1B sponsorship, creating a common pipeline into Illinois-based consulting firms.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored consultant jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
