Which companies sponsor visas for environmental engineers in Illinois?
Engineering and consulting firms are the most consistent sponsors for environmental engineers in Illinois. Companies like Arcadis, CDM Smith, Tetra Tech, AECOM, and Geosyntec Consultants have filed H-1B visa Labor Condition Applications for environmental engineering roles in the Chicago metro area. Large industrial employers and municipal water authorities also sponsor periodically, particularly for roles focused on remediation, air quality, or stormwater compliance.
Which visa types are most common for environmental engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for environmental engineers in Illinois, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or a closely related field. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA, which has no annual cap. Some positions at universities or research institutions may also support J-1 visa or O-1 visa classifications depending on the candidate's profile.
Which cities in Illinois have the most environmental engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, including Naperville, Schaumburg, and Oak Brook, account for the largest concentration of environmental engineering sponsorship jobs in Illinois. Are there state-specific factors that affect environmental engineer visa sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois has some of the more active environmental remediation markets in the Midwest, driven by legacy industrial contamination sites under Illinois EPA oversight and ongoing water infrastructure investment. U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
