Which companies sponsor visas for design engineers in Iowa?
John Deere is among the most active sponsors for design engineers in Iowa, particularly at its Waterloo and Ankeny facilities focused on agricultural and construction equipment. Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids regularly sponsors engineers with backgrounds in avionics and systems design. Pella Corporation, Vermeer, and Rockwell Collins subsidiaries have also filed H-1B petitions for design engineering roles. Sponsorship activity is concentrated in manufacturing and aerospace.
Which visa types are most common for design engineer roles in Iowa?
The H-1B is the most common visa for design engineers in Iowa, as these roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering, satisfying the specialty occupation standard. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN visas under the engineer category, which offers a faster path without a lottery. Engineers with extraordinary ability credentials may also explore the O-1A, though it requires substantial documented recognition.
Which cities in Iowa have the most design engineer sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines and Cedar Rapids account for the majority of design engineer sponsorship activity in Iowa, driven by aerospace, insurance technology, and advanced manufacturing employers. The Quad Cities corridor, which straddles the Iowa-Illinois border near Davenport, is another significant hub given John Deere's engineering operations there. Waterloo and Ankeny also see consistent sponsorship tied to Deere's equipment design divisions. Smaller manufacturing clusters exist in Dubuque and Marshalltown.
How to find design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse design engineer roles in Iowa without sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. Iowa's sponsoring employers tend to cluster in manufacturing and aerospace, so filtering by those sectors on Migrate Mate helps narrow results efficiently. Setting up alerts for Iowa design engineer roles ensures you catch new postings from active sponsors like John Deere and Collins Aerospace early.
Are there state-specific considerations for design engineers seeking sponsorship in Iowa?
Iowa's engineering job market is heavily tied to agricultural equipment and precision manufacturing, so candidates with CAD, product lifecycle management, or mechatronics backgrounds align well with local employer needs. Iowa State University and the University of Iowa generate domestic engineering pipelines, which means international candidates benefit from highlighting specialized skills or prior industry experience that differentiates them. Prevailing wage requirements for H-1B petitions apply based on the specific role's SOC code and the metropolitan statistical area, which varies between Des Moines and smaller Iowa markets.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored design engineer jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
