Which companies sponsor visas for design engineers in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin's most active visa sponsors for design engineers include Kohler Co. in Kohler, Rockwell Automation and Johnson Controls in Milwaukee, and Oshkosh Corporation in Oshkosh. Medical device companies such as Exact Sciences and Epic Systems in the Madison area have also filed H-1B petitions for engineering roles. Sponsorship activity is strongest in manufacturing, industrial automation, and healthcare technology.
Which visa types are most common for design engineer roles in Wisconsin?
The H-1B visa is the most common sponsorship path for design engineers in Wisconsin. The role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation because it requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering. Candidates from Canada or Mexico may also be eligible for the TN visa under the NAFTA/USMCA engineer category, which does not require a lottery and can be obtained at the border.
Which cities in Wisconsin have the most design engineer sponsorship jobs?
Milwaukee is Wisconsin's primary hub for design engineer sponsorship, anchored by large manufacturers and automation companies. Madison follows closely, driven by engineering firms, medical device companies, and proximity to the University of Wisconsin. Oshkosh, Kohler, and Wausau contribute through precision manufacturing and heavy equipment sectors. Smaller cities like Eau Claire and Appleton have also seen engineering sponsorship activity tied to regional industrial employers.
How to find design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you can browse design engineer openings in Wisconsin without sorting through roles that don't offer sponsorship. The platform surfaces positions from manufacturers, automation firms, and medical device companies across Milwaukee, Madison, and Oshkosh. Filtering by state and role on Migrate Mate saves significant time compared to manually researching each employer's sponsorship history.
Are there any state-specific considerations for design engineers seeking sponsorship in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin's manufacturing concentration means many design engineer roles fall under DOL prevailing wage determinations for engineering occupations in metros like Milwaukee-Waukesha and Madison. The University of Wisconsin system produces a consistent pipeline of engineering graduates, meaning some employers are familiar with OPT and STEM OPT extensions, which can bridge the gap before H-1B sponsorship begins. Engineering roles tied to defense contracts may also involve export control compliance that affects international candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored design engineer jobs in Wisconsin?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
