- Develop scenarios (with plans, data, feedback, relevant precedents, etc.) to illustrate a range of relevant solutions that meet the client’s objectives and expresses the tradeoffs associated each option
- Define and develop concepts and prototypes of experiences, programs, services, and spaces to test with users and stakeholders
- Communicate findings through compelling presentations, reports, graphics, videos, websites, and other formats
- Guide other team members, encourage original thinking, and help maintain alignment throughout the course of a project

- Can balance multiple projects and shift comfortably between independent and team-based work
- Are a clear communicator and confident presenter of ideas, findings, and points of view

- Are a critical and creative thinker with a practical, solution-oriented mindset
- Have experience with research methodologies and activities, and are comfortable working with both qualitative and quantitative data
- Embrace continuous learning, share knowledge generously, and help elevate the success of those around you

Which companies sponsor visas for design engineers in New York?
Companies with consistent design engineer sponsorship activity in New York include IBM (with major operations in Armonk and Poughkeepsie), Apple, Samsung Research America, Corning, and Broadcom. Defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman also hire design engineers in New York, though some roles require U.S. citizenship. Larger technology and semiconductor firms tend to have established immigration programs.
Which visa types are most common for design engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for design engineers in New York, given that the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. The O-1A is an option for engineers with demonstrated exceptional ability. International candidates from Canada or Mexico may qualify for TN visa status under the engineer category, which does not involve a lottery.
Which cities in New York have the most design engineer sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the largest share of design engineer sponsorship activity, particularly in consumer electronics, product design, and tech startups. Long Island has a concentration of aerospace and defense employers. The Hudson Valley corridor, anchored by IBM's Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill facilities, is a significant hub for semiconductor and hardware design roles. Syracuse and Buffalo have smaller but active engineering job markets.
How to find design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship eligibility, making it easier to identify design engineer roles in New York without sorting through postings that don't support international candidates. You can search by role and state to see which employers are actively hiring and sponsoring. Focusing on companies with a documented history of H-1B filings in New York increases your chances of finding a receptive employer.
Are there state-specific considerations for design engineers seeking sponsorship in New York?
New York's Department of Labor prevailing wage data applies to LCA filings, so employers sponsoring H-1B design engineers must pay at least the prevailing wage for the relevant occupational category and geographic area. New York City typically carries higher prevailing wage thresholds than upstate regions. Cornell, Columbia, RPI, and NYU all produce engineering graduates who represent a pipeline many New York employers already recruit from internationally.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored design engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
