INTRODUCTION
We are seeking a highly skilled and intellectually driven Senior Systems Integration Engineer with a strong foundation in mathematical modeling, simulation, and data analysis to join a group of engineers and scientists focused on characterizing diagnostic products as they are integrated into instrument systems.
This role bridges rigorous quantitative methods with practical product development, supporting predictive modeling, experimental design, and data-driven decision making across the full IDEXX product lifecycle — from new product development through long-term product support. You will functionally break down, characterize, and model both assay and instrument components and processes to understand the relationship between key inputs and outputs to help develop products within an overall integrated system, ensuring end products meet requirements and perform their intended functions.
This is an on-site role to be based out of our Westbrook, ME corporate Headquarters.
What Will You Do?
- Develop and apply mathematical models and simulations to support product design, performance prediction, and requirements development — bringing a strategic mindset to translate complex technical problems into scalable solutions.
- Build and maintain predictive models and forecasting frameworks to inform product strategy and lifecycle decisions, demonstrating decision quality and the ability to manage complexity in ambiguous, data-rich environments.
- Design and oversee/execute experiments, applying statistical and computational methods to extract actionable insights from large-scale datasets — driving results with rigor and resourcefulness.
- Translate raw data into meaningful information that shapes product and business decisions, exhibiting a strong customer focus and the ability to persuade diverse audiences through clear, evidence-based storytelling.
- Contribute to product requirements development by connecting quantitative analysis to customer and organizational needs, exercising organizational savvy and a global perspective.
- Conceptualize and evaluate technical feasibility of new product concepts and major hardware changes to existing products.
- Partner with cross-functional teams across engineering, science, and commercial functions, fostering a culture that collaborates, drives engagement, and values differences.
- Maintain clear, well-organized documentation of models, methodologies, and results, ensuring accountability and supporting long-term knowledge continuity.
What Do You Need to Succeed?
- A degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Applied Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline. Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s with 5 years’ experience, Master's with 3 years’ experience, or PhD with 2 years’ experience.
- Proficiency in one or more of the following is required: Python, JMP, Mathematica, R, or SAS.
- Hands-on experience with robotics, instrumentation design, or hardware/software integration — from concept through implementation — is preferred, particularly where such systems were developed or adapted to support analytical or diagnostic workflows.
- Ability to characterize and model systems by breaking them down into their component parts, mapping out how each function will work within the overall system to ensure products will operate to requirements and as intended.
- Experience with big data platforms such as Snowflake or Amazon S3 is desired.
- Solid understanding of biology, chemistry, and engineering and how these concepts interact within a system.
- Experience in all phases of development and product support project life cycles.
- The courage to challenge assumptions, advocate for data-driven conclusions, and engage constructively across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity — comfortable operating in evolving problem spaces where requirements and priorities shift.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to present complex findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
What you can expect from us:
- Salary range starting at $105,000 based on experience
- Opportunity for annual cash bonus
- Health / Dental / Vision Benefits Day-One
- 5% matching 401k
- Additional benefits including but not limited to financial support, pet insurance, mental health resources, volunteer paid days off, employee stock program, foundation donation matching, and much more

Which companies sponsor visas for systems engineers in Maine?
Bath Iron Works, a General Dynamics subsidiary in Bath, is one of Maine's most active employers of systems engineers and has sponsored H-1B visas for technical roles. Idexx Laboratories in Westbrook and smaller defense technology firms near Brunswick also have sponsorship histories. Larger national contractors with Maine offices, such as Leidos and SAIC, have sponsored systems engineering roles across their portfolios.
Which visa types are most common for systems engineer roles in Maine?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for systems engineers in Maine, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or a related field. The O-1A is an option for candidates with extraordinary ability or recognition in their field. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN visa status under the engineer occupational category, which does not require a lottery.
Which cities in Maine have the most systems engineer sponsorship jobs?
Portland is Maine's largest city and the most active hiring market for technical roles, with the greatest concentration of technology and healthcare employers. Bath and Brunswick form a secondary hub driven by naval shipbuilding and defense contracting, particularly around Bath Iron Works and former naval air station redevelopments. Augusta sees some demand from state government contractors and IT services firms.
How to find systems engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Maine?
Migrate Mate filters systems engineer job listings specifically to employers that sponsor work visas, which removes the guesswork of identifying willing sponsors in a smaller state market like Maine. You can search by role and state to surface active openings at defense contractors, healthcare technology firms, and engineering consultancies operating in Maine. This is more efficient than sorting through general postings where sponsorship availability is not disclosed.
Are there any state-specific considerations for systems engineers seeking sponsorship in Maine?
Maine's defense sector adds a notable consideration: many systems engineer roles at Bath Iron Works and similar contractors require or lead to security clearances, and employers typically require candidates to be eligible for clearance before sponsoring. Clearance eligibility is generally limited to U.S. citizens and certain permanent residents, so sponsored candidates on H-1B visas may find their role options narrower in Maine than in states with more diversified technology industries. University of Maine graduates in engineering sometimes enter the sponsorship pipeline through campus recruiting at these same employers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored systems engineer jobs in Maine?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
