Which companies sponsor visas for internships in Massachusetts?
Several large Massachusetts employers have established international intern programs with documented sponsorship histories. Biogen, Moderna, and Genzyme are active in life sciences. HubSpot, Wayfair, and MathWorks hire international interns in technology and engineering. Financial institutions like Fidelity Investments and State Street also participate. Sponsorship availability varies by program year and role, so confirming directly with each employer's recruiting team is essential before applying.
Which visa types are most common for internship roles in Massachusetts?
The J-1 visa Intern visa is the most common category for short-term international internships in Massachusetts, administered through a designated sponsor organization rather than the employer directly. F-1 students already enrolled at Massachusetts universities can use Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training to work as interns without a separate employer petition. H-1B visa sponsorship for internships is rare given the lottery and minimum degree requirements.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most internship sponsorship jobs?
Boston and Cambridge together account for the overwhelming majority of internship sponsorship opportunities in Massachusetts. Cambridge's Kendall Square is particularly concentrated, hosting biotech and technology companies alongside MIT and Harvard. Boston's Seaport and Financial Districts add financial services and consulting programs. Worcester has a smaller but active pool tied to UMass Medical School and local manufacturers. Most sponsored internship postings are within commuting distance of the MBTA network.
How to find internship visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate filters internship listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify Massachusetts employers willing to support international candidates. Search by the internship role category and filter to Massachusetts to surface relevant programs across biotech, technology, and financial services. Because sponsorship eligibility varies by visa type and enrollment status, review each listing carefully and follow up with the employer's HR or recruiting contact to confirm the specific authorization they support.
Are there state-specific considerations for international interns in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts has a strong university pipeline connecting international students at MIT, Harvard, Tufts, and Boston University directly to local employers, which means competition for sponsored internship roles is high. The state's life sciences and biotech sectors often require interns to comply with specific lab access or export control regulations, which can affect eligibility for certain international candidates. J-1 interns must also ensure their program sponsor covers Massachusetts, as not all designated sponsors operate in every state.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored internship jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
