Which companies sponsor visas for internships in Washington DC?
Consulting firms like Deloitte, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Accenture Federal Services are among the more active sponsors for internship roles in DC. International organizations such as the World Bank, IMF, and Inter-American Development Bank also sponsor interns through specific visa categories. Large technology contractors and think tanks with established internship programs tend to have the HR infrastructure needed to manage sponsorship.
Which visa types are most common for internship roles in Washington DC?
The J-1 visa is the most common path for interns in Washington DC. It covers intern and trainee exchange visitor categories and requires a designated sponsor organization to issue a DS-2019. The H-1B is generally not available for internships due to the degree requirement and annual cap. CPT and OPT allow F-1 students to work as interns without employer-sponsored visa petitions, making them common for students at DC-area universities.
How to find internship visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate filters internship roles in Washington DC specifically by visa sponsorship, so you can focus on employers already open to sponsoring. Because DC internships span federal contractors, international organizations, and policy-focused nonprofits, narrowing by industry on Migrate Mate helps identify the most relevant opportunities. Applying early matters in DC, where structured internship programs often close months before start dates.
Which areas of Washington DC have the most internship sponsorship jobs?
Most sponsored internships concentrate in the core DC districts: downtown, Foggy Bottom, and Capitol Hill host federal agencies, international organizations, and major consulting offices. The Rosslyn-Ballston corridor in nearby Arlington draws technology and defense contractor internships. Bethesda is another hub for health policy and international development organizations. Nearly all of these are accessible via Metro, and most postings list a DC or Northern Virginia address.
Are there any Washington DC-specific considerations for international interns seeking visa sponsorship?
DC's heavy concentration of federal contractors means many internship roles require security clearances, which are generally unavailable to non-US citizens or permanent residents. This narrows the field considerably for international candidates. However, the city's density of international organizations, NGOs, and multilateral institutions creates a parallel pipeline that specifically recruits global talent. Universities like Georgetown, GWU, and American University have strong ties to these employers and often facilitate J-1 sponsorship connections.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored internship jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
