Which companies sponsor visas for internships in North Carolina?
Large employers with established internship programs and a history of visa sponsorship include Red Hat, Lenovo, Cisco (Research Triangle Park), Bank of America and Wells Fargo in Charlotte, and pharmaceutical companies like Biogen and Novo Nordisk. Academic medical centers such as Duke Health and UNC Health also sponsor interns in research and clinical informatics roles. Sponsorship availability varies by program and year.
Which visa types are most common for internship roles in North Carolina?
F-1 CPT and F-1 OPT are by far the most common authorizations for international interns in North Carolina, allowing students and recent graduates to work without requiring the employer to file a separate petition. J-1 intern and trainee visas are also used, particularly through authorized sponsor organizations. H-1B sponsorship for summer internships is rare, as the cap and timeline make it impractical for short-term roles.
Which cities in North Carolina have the most internship sponsorship jobs?
The Research Triangle area covering Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill is the most concentrated hub, driven by Research Triangle Park, three major research universities, and a dense cluster of tech and life sciences employers. Charlotte follows closely, particularly for finance, fintech, and operations internships. Smaller but notable internship activity exists in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, especially in manufacturing and healthcare.
How to find internship visa sponsorship jobs in North Carolina?
Migrate Mate filters internship listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability and state, so you can browse roles in North Carolina without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. Given the concentration of employers in the Research Triangle and Charlotte, filtering by those metros on Migrate Mate helps narrow results to the highest-density markets for sponsored internship opportunities in the state.
Are there any state-specific considerations for international interns in North Carolina?
North Carolina's Research Triangle Park is one of the largest research parks in the country, which means many internships are tied to federally funded research projects. Some of those roles carry export control or security considerations that can affect eligibility for certain international candidates. University pipelines at NC State, Duke, and UNC are strong, and employers in the corridor are generally familiar with CPT and OPT authorization requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored internship jobs in North Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
