Which companies sponsor visas for controls engineers in Michigan?
Michigan's largest controls engineer visa sponsors are concentrated in the automotive and advanced manufacturing sectors. Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Stellantis, and Bosch have established sponsorship track records for controls and automation roles. Tier 1 suppliers such as Magna International, Aptiv, and BorgWarner also regularly sponsor H-1B visa petitions for engineers with PLC programming, robotics integration, and industrial automation experience.
Which visa types are most common for controls engineer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa for controls engineers in Michigan, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. Canadian and Mexican citizens may qualify for TN visa status under the engineer category, which offers a faster, lottery-free path. Candidates with extraordinary ability may also explore the O-1A.
Which cities in Michigan have the most controls engineer sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding metro area, including Auburn Hills, Dearborn, and Warren, account for the largest concentration of controls engineer sponsorship jobs in Michigan due to the density of automotive OEMs and suppliers. Grand Rapids is a secondary hub with strong activity in food processing, medical device manufacturing, and industrial automation. Lansing and Flint also have sponsorship activity tied to GM assembly operations.
How to find controls engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to find controls engineer roles in Michigan without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. You can search by state and role to surface current openings from automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and industrial manufacturers actively sponsoring H-1B and TN petitions for engineers with automation and controls expertise.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for controls engineers seeking sponsorship?
Michigan's automotive industry drives unusually high demand for controls engineers with experience in PLC platforms like Allen-Bradley and Siemens, as well as robotics integration for assembly lines. Universities such as the University of Michigan and Michigan State University produce strong local pipelines, but OEMs and suppliers also recruit internationally. Prevailing wage requirements apply to all sponsored roles, with wage levels determined by the specific metro area and job title filed on the Labor Condition Application.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored controls engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
