Which companies sponsor visas for electrical engineers in Michigan?
Michigan's largest visa sponsors for electrical engineers include General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Stellantis, Aptiv, Bosch, and Magna International, all of which have filed significant H-1B Labor Condition Applications in recent years. Semiconductor and energy companies such as Consumers Energy and DTE Energy also sponsor electrical engineers, particularly for power systems and grid infrastructure roles concentrated in the Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor corridors.
Which visa types are most common for electrical engineer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa for electrical engineers in Michigan, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Some engineers also enter through the TN visa if they hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship, or through OPT and STEM OPT extensions while transitioning from Michigan universities into full-time sponsored positions.
How to find electrical engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship eligibility, making it straightforward to browse electrical engineer openings in Michigan without sorting through roles that won't sponsor. You can filter by location, employer, and visa type to surface positions from automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and energy companies actively hiring sponsored engineers across Metro Detroit, Ann Arbor, and West Michigan.
Which cities in Michigan have the most electrical engineer sponsorship jobs?
Metro Detroit, including Warren, Dearborn, and Auburn Hills, accounts for the highest concentration of sponsored electrical engineer roles due to the density of automotive OEMs and suppliers headquartered there. Ann Arbor is a strong secondary market, driven by University of Michigan spinouts and tech-adjacent employers. Grand Rapids has a growing manufacturing and medical device sector that sponsors electrical engineers with some regularity.
Are there any Michigan-specific factors electrical engineers should know about visa sponsorship?
Michigan's automotive industry creates strong demand for electrical engineers with expertise in EV powertrain, battery management systems, and ADAS, which are specializations that align well with H-1B specialty occupation standards. The University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Michigan Tech supply a significant pipeline of international engineering graduates who often pursue OPT roles locally before transitioning to H-1B sponsorship with the same Michigan-based employer.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored electrical engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
