Which companies sponsor visas for electrical engineers in Illinois?
Several large Illinois employers have consistent H-1B sponsorship histories for electrical engineers. Caterpillar in Peoria, Motorola Solutions and Exelon in Chicago, Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, and Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont all appear regularly in Department of Labor LCA disclosure data for electrical engineering roles. Mid-sized defense contractors and utilities operating across the state also sponsor, though at lower volumes than these larger employers.
Which visa types are most common for electrical engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for electrical engineers in Illinois, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Australians may qualify for the E-3, and Canadians or Mexicans may qualify for the TN visa under the engineer category, both of which bypass the H-1B lottery entirely.
Which cities in Illinois have the most electrical engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and its northern suburbs, particularly the North Shore corridor where Abbott, Motorola Solutions, and several defense firms are headquartered, account for the majority of electrical engineer sponsorship activity in Illinois. Peoria is a secondary hub driven largely by Caterpillar's engineering operations. Champaign-Urbana also sees sponsorship activity, partly driven by proximity to the University of Illinois and affiliated research institutions.
How to find electrical engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship eligibility, making it practical to search electrical engineer roles in Illinois without sorting through employers unlikely to sponsor. Because Illinois has a concentrated set of large engineering employers, filtering by location and role on Migrate Mate can surface openings at companies with documented sponsorship histories in the state, particularly in Chicago, Peoria, and the North Shore.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for electrical engineers pursuing visa sponsorship?
Illinois employers filing H-1B petitions for electrical engineers must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the specific metro area, meaning wage levels in Chicago are benchmarked separately from downstate regions like Peoria. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign produces a large pipeline of electrical engineering graduates, so employers in the state are generally familiar with OPT-to-H-1B transitions, which can make initial hiring conversations more straightforward for F-1 students already in Illinois.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored electrical engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
