Job Summary
The Sr Electrical R&D Engineer contributes to the design, development, testing, and refinement of new electromechanical medical devices for Cardinal Health. This role involves working on critical products such as enteral feeding pumps, thermometers, and compression devices. A key aspect of the position includes utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) packages to develop 3D product models, specifications, and detailed drawings. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, manufacturers, business partners, and vendors globally to ensure successful project execution within a regulated medical device environment.
Responsibilities
- Create designs of analog and digital electronic circuit schematics and PCBAs for new and on-market products, with microcontroller-based systems, perform prototype builds, perform design characterization studies, and design release for qualification and manufacturing including design requirements, specifications, and risk management.
- Deliver results on varied technical complexity projects for electronic systems and circuit design and re-designs for obsolete parts replacement with Altium (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) PCBA schematic and PCBA layout, compilation of PCBA manufacturing build packages, creation of Bill of Materials (BOMs), components documentation, release in design documentation systems.
- Develop, modify, approve, and release electrical design documentation, specifications, and drawings.
- Provide design characterization studies and Verification Testing, author technical reports, Test Protocols, and present technical reviews using calculations, simulation and testing methods to establish system, sub-system, and component level performance limits, Design Margin and stack-up analyses.
- Perform complex technical investigations at component and systems level for Root Cause Analysis including various issues that arise pertaining to concept designs and production products through testing, Root Cause Analysis Methods, Reliability engineering.
- Work with cross-functional systems, software, mechanical, quality, sourcing, manufacturing teams on projects involving electrical engineering expertise.
- Write comprehensive Reports including Design Characterization and Design Descriptions, Test Protocols, Test Reports, etc.
- Defines specifications and oversees component manufacturing processes to ensure quality with respect to finished products.
- Perform Regulatory compliance Certification testing including EMC, Electrical Safety, etc.
- Conduct Research in New Product Innovation including sensor, electrical design architecture, wireless communications technologies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering preferred.
- 2+ years related work experience including PCBA designs with CAD tool such as Altium, Allegro, etc preferred.
- Analog, digital, mixed signal, microprocessor and micro-controller electronics circuit experience and skills including circuit design, prototype development, component engineering, EMC testing, design verification and validation, simulation, through documentation.
- Hands on experience with lab test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, data acquisition equipment, etc.
- Ability to conduct electrical troubleshooting on electrical components, PCBA’s, power supplies, displays, batteries, sensors, using a variety of electrical test methods.
- Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM), Design for Reliability (DFR), Design for high-speed signal integrity preferred.
- Experience with systems/circuit level simulation and modelling with MATLAB / Simulink, etc. preferred.
- Electrical Design Margin and stack-up margin analysis preferred.
- Prior experience in medical device design controls and medical device Regulatory environments preferred.
Anticipated salary range: $80,500 – 103,410
