Which companies sponsor visas for construction engineers in New York?
Large engineering and construction firms with a strong New York presence are the most consistent sponsors. Turner Construction, AECOM, Skanska, Thornton Tomasetti, and WSP Global have all filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for construction engineering roles in New York. Firms managing major public infrastructure contracts, including those with the MTA and Port Authority, also tend to have established sponsorship processes.
Which visa types are most common for construction engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common work visa for construction engineers in New York, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant engineering degree. Candidates from Canada or Mexico may also be eligible for the TN visa under the engineer category. Individuals with extraordinary ability or a strong research record may explore the O-1A, though that pathway is less common in standard construction roles.
Which cities in New York have the most construction engineer sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the large majority of construction engineer sponsorship activity in the state, driven by continuous commercial, residential, and infrastructure development across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Albany sees demand tied to state government and infrastructure projects. Buffalo has experienced a construction uptick connected to semiconductor manufacturing expansion, including the TSMC-adjacent supply chain developments in the Western New York region.
How to find construction engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates and filters construction engineer jobs in New York by visa sponsorship availability, saving you the time of manually screening postings. Beyond browsing Migrate Mate, targeting firms with a history of H-1B filings for engineering roles and applying directly through their careers pages improves your chances, as large general contractors and infrastructure consultancies in New York sponsor more consistently than smaller specialty contractors.
Are there state-specific considerations for construction engineers seeking sponsorship in New York?
New York State requires construction engineers working on licensed projects to be overseen by a Professional Engineer registered in New York, which can affect how employers structure roles and petitions. The New York City construction market is also heavily unionized, and some union agreements can complicate H-1B sponsorship for certain site-based roles. Office-based design, project management, and infrastructure planning positions at larger firms tend to have fewer of these complications.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored construction engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
