INTRODUCTION
The client is seeking an experienced, high-caliber AS400 Developer/Admin for a long-term contract engagement. This critical resource will provide essential application maintenance, database management, and application-level administration services for client’s core IBM AS/400 (IBM i Series) environment.
Because the underlying AS/400 hardware partition, operating system, and baseline infrastructure are fully hosted and managed by an external provider, this position does not require hardware or OS-level systems engineering. Instead, the contractor will focus on application development, software support, database management, and serving as the technical liaison to Ensono for environment-level modifications.
Additionally, the contractor will play a key role in assisting the client IT leadership with database extraction, documentation of legacy business logic, and support for ongoing cloud migration and data archiving initiatives.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities
- Legacy Application Maintenance & Support
- Maintain, modify, and optimize custom legacy application code written in RPG, RPG III, RPG IV (ILE RPG), RPGLE, and Control Language (CL).
- Investigate and troubleshoot operational bugs, batch run anomalies, and user-reported system issues.
-
Update existing logic to adapt to regulatory changes, licensing requirements, and client business process updates.
-
Application Administration & Infrastructure Liaison
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact to coordinate with the hosting provider for system maintenance, OS patching schedules, database utilities, and environmental adjustments.
- Manage application-level security configurations, including user profiles, object-level authority, and verify system audit logs (QAUDJRN) to maintain system integrity.
- Manage local job queues, active subsystems, and application-level job schedulers.
-
Coordinate with Ensono’s storage and backup operations teams to ensure application backup windows, disaster recovery testing, and restoration verifications are carried out successfully.
-
DB2 Database & Integration Management
- Query, manage, and tune DB2 for i databases, optimizing SQL queries and indexes to ensure database responsiveness.
-
Support secure, automated file transfers (SFTP/FTP) and interfaces between the hosted AS400 partition and downstream state, regional, or partner systems.
-
Modernization & Migration Enablement
- Cooperate with the client database administrators and cloud architects to extract, clean, and archive legacy tables.
- Document system flows, database schemas, and interdependencies to facilitate a seamless transition of legacy business logic to modern cloud systems.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in AS400 (IBM i, iSeries) application development and support.

- Direct experience assisting in legacy-to-cloud migrations or data warehousing extractions.
- Familiarity with modern IBM i tools, such as Rational Developer for i (RDi).
- Prior experience working in public sector environments or supporting insurance regulatory systems.

Which companies sponsor visas for product software engineers in Oklahoma?
Companies with a track record of H-1B sponsorship for product software engineers in Oklahoma include Williams Companies and ONEOK in the energy sector, American Airlines' Tulsa maintenance technology division, and financial services firms in Oklahoma City. State government-adjacent technology contractors and aerospace suppliers around Tulsa also file LCAs for product engineering roles on a recurring basis.
Which visa types are most common for product software engineer roles in Oklahoma?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for product software engineers in Oklahoma, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Some applicants, particularly Canadians and Mexicans, use the TN visa. Australians may qualify for the E-3 visa. L-1B transfers are also used within multinational companies with Oklahoma offices.
Which cities in Oklahoma have the most product software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Oklahoma City and Tulsa account for the large majority of product software engineer sponsorship activity in the state. Oklahoma City draws fintech, healthcare IT, and government contracting employers, while Tulsa concentrates energy technology and aerospace engineering roles. Stillwater and Norman see some activity driven by Oklahoma State University and University of Oklahoma research commercialization and affiliated tech employers.
How to find product software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Oklahoma?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse product software engineer roles in Oklahoma without sifting through positions that don't sponsor. Because Oklahoma's sponsoring employers are spread across energy, aerospace, and fintech rather than concentrated in one sector, using Migrate Mate's role-specific and state-specific filters saves meaningful time compared to broad job searches.
Are there any state-specific considerations for product software engineers seeking sponsorship in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma's prevailing wage requirements for H-1B product software engineers are set by the Department of Labor based on the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metropolitan statistical areas, which tend to reflect lower wage floors than coastal tech hubs. Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma produce engineering graduates who create local technical networks worth engaging. The state's energy and aerospace concentration means product roles here often require domain knowledge in industrial software, SCADA systems, or embedded platforms.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored product software engineer jobs in Oklahoma?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
