Tips for Finding OPT Jobs in South Dakota
Target Sioux Falls first
Sioux Falls is South Dakota's largest city and economic hub, home to the most OPT-friendly employers in healthcare, finance, and technology. Concentrating your search there maximizes your exposure to companies with established HR processes for supporting international workers.
Focus on healthcare and life sciences employers
Sanford Health and Avera Health are among the state's largest employers and regularly hire international graduates in clinical, research, and administrative roles. Positions requiring specialized degrees tend to align well with F-1 OPT STEM and standard authorization categories.
Check STEM OPT eligibility for your degree
If your degree is in a STEM-designated field, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension beyond standard OPT. Confirming your program's CIP code with your DSO before applying lets you honestly represent your work authorization timeline to South Dakota employers.
Search for roles that match your exact degree field
South Dakota employers sponsoring OPT need roles directly related to your major. Use Migrate Mate to filter by visa type and find positions where the job description aligns with your field of study, which is a core requirement for OPT authorization.
Engage university career centers in the state
South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, and South Dakota Mines have employer relationships with regional companies. Their career fairs attract employers already familiar with OPT timelines, making them a strong starting point for local sponsorship opportunities.
Be upfront about your OPT end date early
South Dakota employers outside major industries may be unfamiliar with F-1 OPT timelines. Clearly stating your authorization period and extension eligibility upfront reduces employer hesitation and helps hiring managers at smaller regional firms understand exactly what sponsoring OPT involves.

Which industries in South Dakota sponsor the most F-1 OPT visas?
Healthcare, agriculture technology, financial services, and engineering are the strongest industries for F-1 OPT sponsorship in South Dakota. Large health systems like Sanford Health and Avera Health are consistent OPT employers. Agricultural technology companies tied to the state's farming economy also hire international graduates, particularly in data science, engineering, and applied sciences roles.
Which cities in South Dakota have the most F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Sioux Falls accounts for the largest share of F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in South Dakota by a significant margin, driven by its concentration of healthcare, finance, and technology employers. Rapid City is the second-largest market, with opportunities in engineering, tourism, and healthcare. Brookings, home to South Dakota State University, also has employer activity tied to its research and agriculture sectors.
What types of roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in South Dakota?
Roles that directly relate to your degree field qualify for F-1 OPT in South Dakota. In practice, this includes positions in software development, clinical research, data analysis, mechanical and civil engineering, financial analysis, and agricultural sciences. Employers in healthcare and technology are most experienced with OPT documentation requirements, making those sectors more straightforward for international graduates to enter.
How do I find F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in South Dakota?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters job listings by visa type, so you can search directly for F-1 OPT roles in South Dakota without having to screen out companies that don't sponsor. Combining that with outreach through South Dakota university career centers and regional employer career fairs gives you the most targeted approach for this market.
Are there any state-specific considerations for F-1 OPT sponsorship in South Dakota?
South Dakota has a smaller employer base than coastal states, so fewer companies have established international hiring processes. Many mid-size and smaller employers may not be familiar with OPT authorization requirements, which means you may need to briefly explain CPT and OPT to hiring managers. Focusing on larger regional employers in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, or companies with existing university recruitment relationships, reduces this friction significantly.
