Which visa types are most common for mental health therapy roles in Texas?
The H-1B is the most common visa for licensed mental health therapists in Texas, as roles like Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) generally qualify as specialty occupations requiring a relevant master's degree. Some nonprofit community mental health centers may also support J-1 visa waivers through the Conrad 30 program, which places foreign national clinicians in underserved areas of Texas in exchange for a service commitment.
Which companies sponsor visas for mental health therapists in Texas?
Large health systems are the most active sponsors for mental health therapy roles in Texas. UT Southwestern Medical Center, Houston Methodist, Baylor Scott and White Health, and Texas Health Resources have all filed H-1B petitions for clinical and behavioral health positions. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) across the state also sponsor therapists, particularly through J-1 waiver arrangements tied to service in underserved communities.
Which cities in Texas have the most mental health therapy sponsorship jobs?
Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth account for the highest concentration of mental health therapy sponsorship opportunities in Texas, driven by the density of major hospital systems, VA medical centers, and large group practices. Austin has a growing behavioral health sector tied to its expanding tech and university population. San Antonio also has notable demand, partly due to military-affiliated mental health services at Fort Sam Houston and Brooke Army Medical Center.
How to find mental health therapy visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship roles, including mental health therapy positions in Texas. You can filter by state and role type to see employers currently hiring therapists, counselors, and clinical social workers who are open to sponsoring H-1B or J-1 visas. This saves significant time compared to screening general job listings where sponsorship availability is rarely stated upfront.
Are there any state-specific considerations for mental health therapists seeking visa sponsorship in Texas?
Texas requires state licensure before practicing independently, so international therapists typically need to have their foreign credentials evaluated for equivalency before obtaining an LPC or LCSW license from the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors or the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners. Employers sponsoring H-1B petitions must also file a Labor Condition Application certifying the offered role meets prevailing wage standards for the relevant Texas metropolitan area, which varies by city and specialty.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored mental health therapy jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
