About the Role:
As an AI Native Software Engineer, you direct AI agents to build products and solutions, rather than writing code directly. You leverage AI coding agents to replace manual tasks, build and ship entire applications and basic agents end-to-end. You're a full-stack product builder who thinks in terms of "I need to solve this customer problem" and orchestrates AI to get there. You Will:
- Build complete applications, workflow automations, and basic agents within your team's product area using AI coding agents
- Translate customer needs into buildable specifications and ship solutions from requirements through deployment
- Instrument solutions to track usage and outcomes, iterating based on what you learn
- Evaluate AI-generated output against Remitly's standards for security, privacy, reliability, and quality before shipping
- Participate in customer conversations to understand acute problems and identify automation opportunities
- Document your approaches, effective prompts, and patterns for the team
You Have:
- Proficiency with AI coding agents for end-to-end application development
- Ability to write effective prompts and iterate to achieve desired outcomes
- Understanding of full-stack applications: frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure
- Familiarity with common architectural patterns (web applications, APIs, databases, queues)
- Awareness of fundamental design principles, common UI/UX patterns, and basic product development concepts
- Ability to read and interpret basic analytics (usage metrics, conversion rates, error rates)
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, learning-oriented mindset

Which companies sponsor visas for software engineer AIs in Virginia?
Northern Virginia's defense and cloud sectors host many of the state's most active visa sponsors. Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, Amazon Web Services, and Capital One have all filed H-1B visa Labor Condition Applications for AI and machine learning engineering roles. Federal contractors in the McLean and Arlington area frequently sponsor international software engineers, though active security clearance requirements can limit eligibility for some visa holders.
Which visa types are most common for software engineer AI roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa for AI software engineers in Virginia, given that roles requiring specialized knowledge in machine learning, deep learning, or neural network architecture typically qualify as specialty occupations. Candidates already on F-1 OPT with a STEM extension have up to three years of work authorization before needing H-1B sponsorship. L-1B transfers are also used when candidates move from a foreign office of a multinational employer based in Virginia.
Which cities in Virginia have the most software engineer AI sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly the cities of McLean, Reston, Arlington, and Herndon, accounts for the large majority of AI software engineering sponsorship activity in the state. This corridor sits adjacent to Washington D.C. and hosts a dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and cloud computing infrastructure. Richmond has a smaller but growing tech presence, with some financial services and health tech firms sponsoring international engineers.
How to find software engineer ai visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters software engineer AI roles in Virginia by visa sponsorship history, so you're not sorting through listings that won't support your status. Beyond browsing Migrate Mate, targeting employers with documented H-1B filings in Northern Virginia, particularly defense tech and cloud firms, improves your chances of reaching companies already familiar with the sponsorship process for AI engineering roles.
Are there any state-specific considerations for AI software engineers seeking sponsorship in Virginia?
Virginia's large federal contracting sector introduces a consideration most states don't have: many AI engineering roles require security clearances, and some clearances are restricted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents, which can limit visa holders' access to certain positions. University pipelines from George Mason University and Virginia Tech also feed AI talent into Northern Virginia employers, so competition for sponsorship roles can be high. Focusing on private-sector cloud and fintech employers in the region often offers more accessible sponsorship pathways.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software engineer ai jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
