Mission
Speechify is the easiest way to listen to the world's information. Articles on the web, documents in the cloud, books on your phone. We absorb it all and let you listen to it at your desk, on the go, at your own speed, and with tools that make learning easier, deeper, and faster.
What streaming services have done for audio entertainment, we're doing for audio information. And whatever we're doing seems to be working. We're #1 in our category, and experiencing exponential growth.
Overview
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Core Experiences Team. This team builds and maintains the foundational services and SDKs that power Speechify's product experience across platforms. It's a critical role for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of product and infrastructure, thinks strategically, and is passionate about designing clear, reliable APIs and simple systems that directly enhance the user experience.
- Collaborate with Speechify's Product Teams to scope projects, find ways to reduce scope to get faster feedback from customers, navigate the integration/UX tradeoffs relevant to different product teams, and deliver solutions via our cross-platform SDK
- Optimize existing functionality to ship things like faster loading and more intelligent parsing by designing more efficient abstractions and improving our algorithms
- Ship cloud functions, lightweight backend services, and jobs using Kotlin
An Ideal Candidate Should Have
- Systems thinking. You know that optimizing a system requires end-to-end design, and you believe simplicity is valuable.
- Speed. You work quickly to generate ideas and options and know how to decide which things can ship now and what things need time
- Focus. We're a high-growth startup with a busy, remote team. You know how and when to engage or be heads down
- Collaboration. You know how to inspire, play, and negotiate with opinionated designers, marketers, and PMs
- Preferred Tech Stack:
- Kotlin Multiplatform (Java experience is OK but role is Kotlin Multiplatform)
- Prior experience with GCP is a plus
What We Offer
- A fast-growing environment where you can help shape the company and product.
- An entrepreneurial-minded team that supports risk, intuition, and hustle.
- A hands-off management approach so you can focus and do your best work.
- An opportunity to make a big impact in a transformative industry.
- Competitive salaries, a friendly and laid-back atmosphere, and a commitment to building a great asynchronous culture.
- Opportunity to work on a life-changing product that millions of people use.
- Build products that directly impact and support people with learning differences like dyslexia, ADD, low vision, concussions, autism, and more.
- Work in one of the fastest growing sectors of tech, the intersection of artificial intelligence and audio.
The United States Based Salary range for this role is: 140,000-200,000 USD/Year + Bonus + Stock depending on experience

Which companies sponsor visas for senior software developers in Washington DC?
Federal contractors are the dominant employers of senior software developers in the DC metro area, with firms like Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, Deloitte, and Accenture Federal Services regularly filing H-1B visa petitions. Commercial tech companies with DC offices, such as Amazon Web Services and Palantir, also sponsor senior engineering roles. Sponsorship availability varies by contract cycle and project needs, so it's worth researching individual firms directly.
Which visa types are most common for senior software developer roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B is the most common visa for senior software developers in Washington DC, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Some senior developers transfer from L-1B (intraspecialized knowledge) status when relocating within a multinational firm. Canadians and Mexicans may also be eligible for TN visa status under the USMCA, which covers computer systems analysts and related roles.
How to find senior software developer visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify senior software developer roles in the Washington DC area without sifting through positions that don't sponsor. You can search by role and location to surface relevant openings from federal contractors, consulting firms, and commercial employers. Given DC's concentration of clearance-heavy roles, filtering by sponsorship status upfront saves significant time in your search.
Which cities in Washington DC have the most senior software developer sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC itself concentrates the most sponsorship activity, particularly around the areas of K Street, Capitol Hill, and the Navy Yard tech corridor. The broader metro area extends sponsorship opportunities into Northern Virginia, especially Arlington and Reston, which host major federal agency contractors and tech firm headquarters. Bethesda and Silver Spring in Maryland also contribute roles, particularly from health IT firms and government health agencies.
Are there any Washington DC-specific considerations for senior software developers seeking visa sponsorship?
Many senior software developer roles in Washington DC require or prefer security clearances, which are generally not available to visa holders who are not permanent residents or citizens. This narrows the pool of sponsoring employers compared to other tech markets, but uncleared positions at consulting firms, nonprofits, and commercial technology companies remain accessible. Federal contractors in DC tend to file H-1B petitions on project timelines, so hiring cycles may differ from standard calendar-year tech recruiting patterns.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior software developer jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
