How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Assistant Vice President
Target bulge bracket firms and top consulting companies
Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, McKinsey, and BCG sponsor the highest number of AVP-level positions. These firms have dedicated immigration teams and established sponsorship processes.
Emphasize specialized financial expertise in applications
AVP roles require advanced knowledge in derivatives, risk modeling, or M&A analysis. Highlight technical skills that clearly demonstrate the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B approval.
Consider O-1 for exceptional track record
If you have significant deal experience, industry recognition, or advanced certifications like CFA, the O-1 extraordinary ability visa may offer faster processing than H-1B.
Apply during off-peak H-1B season
Many AVP positions open outside the March H-1B filing window. Cap-exempt employers like universities or research institutions may offer alternative pathways without lottery constraints.
Highlight MBA from target schools
Top-tier MBA programs from schools like Wharton or Kellogg strengthen visa applications. Finance employers value these credentials for demonstrating specialized business knowledge requirements.
Research employer's PERM track record
Check DOL disclosure data for the company's green card sponsorship history. Firms with active PERM filings demonstrate long-term commitment to retaining international employees.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Assistant Vice President roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, AVP positions typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring specialized knowledge in finance, risk management, or business strategy. The role's analytical complexity and degree requirements usually satisfy H-1B criteria. However, USCIS scrutinizes whether the position truly requires bachelor's-level expertise in a specific field rather than general business experience.
What degree backgrounds work for AVP visa applications?
Finance, economics, accounting, mathematics, or MBA degrees align well with AVP responsibilities. Engineering or computer science backgrounds can work for quantitative roles in algorithmic trading or risk modeling. The key is demonstrating how your academic background directly relates to the specific AVP function you'll perform.
How do AVP approval rates compare to other finance roles?
AVP positions generally have strong H-1B approval rates due to clear specialty occupation requirements and substantial employer documentation. However, roles with vague job descriptions or overlapping responsibilities may face RFEs. O-1 applications for senior AVPs with exceptional track records typically see higher approval rates than standard H-1B petitions.
Can I get an AVP role without prior U.S. work experience?
Yes, but it's challenging. Most AVP positions require 5-7 years of relevant experience, often including U.S. market knowledge. International candidates typically start at analyst or associate levels first. However, top MBA programs or exceptional backgrounds in global markets can open direct AVP opportunities.
Which visa works better for senior AVP positions?
O-1 often works better for senior AVPs with distinguished careers, industry recognition, or significant deal experience. It offers faster processing and no annual caps. H-1B remains suitable for standard AVP promotions or lateral moves. EB-1A may apply for AVPs with extraordinary achievements in finance or consulting.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Assistant Vice President jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
