At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.
We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).
Schwab Retirement Plan Services (SRPS) is one of the leading providers of bundled retirement plan services. For mid-to-large companies, Schwab offers full-service retirement plans featuring complete retirement services from a single source. Schwab’s combined expertise in recordkeeping and related services, investment choice and award-winning participant experience and education (including retirement plan advice) and high-end technology helps employers offer competitive employee benefits. As a group we work to unburden our clients in automating procedures and processes to help reduce the clients' time needed to supervise daily administration of their plan.
The Payroll Analysis & Consulting Manager is expected to be a subject matter authority in the flow and impact of data within the recordkeeping system, retirement plan design, and providing in-depth consultative services to SRPS plan sponsors. For Schwab to accurately administer all features of a client's plan accurately & efficiently, we need to ensure we receive accurate data from each plan and/or their 3rd party payroll vendor. This data is typically passed via a recurring payroll feed each pay cycle and contains both financial and demographic information. Getting the ongoing inbound and outbound data feeds established is critical to the success of the plan's administration, as the data housed within these feeds impact everything from account setup to contributions into the plan, clear through to retirement and the participant's ability to disburse funds from the plan. The Payroll Analysis & Consulting Manager’s primary role is to facilitate 180°/360° payroll integration set-ups/modifications for new and existing plan sponsors. In this role, you will have a unique opportunity of working not only with our plan sponsors, but also with a variety of 3rd party payroll vendors to craft, build, test and implement ongoing payroll feeds.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a primary point of contact for plan sponsors and third-party payroll vendors, using the most effective communication channel (email and/or phone) to address payroll and integration needs.
- Provide proactive payroll consulting and project management support for new client onboarding, payroll vendor transitions, and file format changes for existing Schwab clients.
- Lead project timeline definition and execution by facilitating recurring touchpoints with clients and vendors to ensure deliverables remain on track and risks are identified early.
- Partner with internal teams and external stakeholders to define payroll data requirements that enhance retirement plan administration, improve operational efficiency, reduce financial risk, and elevate the client experience.
- Design, implement, and support automated inbound and outbound payroll file transmissions between plan sponsors’ payroll providers and Schwab’s 401(k) recordkeeping platforms.
- Manage detailed analysis of audited inbound and outbound payroll test files, collaborating with internal and external partners to research, resolve, and remediate data or processing issues.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive payroll file specifications and documentation related to integration setups, enhancements, and ongoing changes.
- Prepare and validate recordkeeping systems for new or updated inbound and outbound payroll file integrations to ensure accurate and timely processing.
- Research and resolve complex payroll and data integration issues through root-cause analysis and cross-functional collaboration.
- Execute quality control practices, maintain procedures, and drive process improvements to meet key performance results and consistently exceed client expectations.
- Manage daily workloads effectively by monitoring workflow, prioritizing tasks, and escalating capacity or risk concerns to leadership as needed to meet deadlines and service commitments.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Payroll Consultant
Target employers with established payroll practices
Large enterprises, HR tech companies, and Big Four consulting firms sponsor payroll roles far more consistently than small businesses. These employers already have immigration counsel on staff and understand the H-1B petition process for this specialty.
Position your degree as the foundation
H-1B sponsorship requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation. A degree in accounting, finance, human resources, or business administration directly tied to payroll systems and compliance work strengthens that argument considerably during adjudication.
Highlight payroll compliance and systems expertise
USCIS scrutinizes whether the role genuinely requires a degree. Emphasizing regulatory compliance, multi-state tax knowledge, and enterprise payroll software like Workday or SAP reinforces the specialized nature of the position in your petition.
Canadian and Mexican nationals should explore TN status
Payroll Consultants from Canada or Mexico may qualify under the TN visa's accountant or management consultant categories. TN requires no lottery, no annual cap, and can often be obtained at the border or port of entry significantly faster than H-1B.
Clarify the consulting engagement structure upfront
If the role involves third-party client placements, visa sponsorship becomes more complex. Employers sponsoring consultants deployed to client sites face additional USCIS scrutiny, so understanding the employer-employee relationship before applying saves significant time.
Get the offer letter to specify the degree requirement
Your offer letter should explicitly state that a bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required for the position. Vague language like 'preferred' rather than 'required' weakens the specialty occupation argument and increases the risk of an RFE.

Find Payroll Consultant JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a Payroll Consultant get H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Payroll Consultant roles regularly qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, human resources, or a related field. USCIS has approved petitions for this title across consulting firms, HR technology companies, and large corporate employers. The key is ensuring the job description clearly reflects duties that necessitate that specific degree, rather than general administrative work any employee could perform.
Does a Payroll Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation?
Generally yes, provided the employer's job requirements establish that a specific bachelor's degree is genuinely necessary. Roles involving multi-state payroll tax compliance, HRIS implementation, regulatory audits, or international payroll typically satisfy USCIS specialty occupation criteria. Roles framed as general payroll processing without degree-specific duties face higher denial risk. Attorneys often recommend that the offer letter and supporting documentation explicitly state the degree field requirement.
Are there visa options besides H-1B for Payroll Consultants?
Yes. Canadian and Mexican nationals can often enter under TN status using the accountant or management consultant categories, bypassing the H-1B lottery entirely. Australians may qualify for the E-3 visa if the role meets specialty occupation standards. L-1 transfers are available for consultants already employed abroad by a U.S.-affiliated company. Each pathway has different employer requirements and processing timelines worth evaluating before committing to an H-1B strategy.
What degree do I need for a sponsored Payroll Consultant position?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, human resources management, or business administration. Some employers accept information systems degrees for roles centered on HRIS platforms like Workday or SAP. A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for visa purposes. Unrelated degrees combined with substantial payroll-specific experience may still qualify through the three-for-one experience substitution rule under H-1B regulations.
Where can I find Payroll Consultant jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this, every listing on the platform is from an employer open to visa sponsorship, so you're not filtering through hundreds of postings that won't work for your situation. Payroll roles with sponsorship tend to appear most at HR technology firms, Big Four consulting practices, and large multinationals running complex payroll operations across multiple states or countries.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Payroll Consultant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
