Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as an Automation Technician
Target manufacturing and industrial automation companies
Companies like Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and ABB frequently sponsor automation technicians. Manufacturing facilities and industrial plants have consistent visa sponsorship needs for technical roles.
Emphasize your engineering degree and technical certifications
USCIS requires specialty occupation proof. Highlight your electrical or mechanical engineering degree, PLC programming certifications, and specialized automation training to strengthen your case.
Apply through engineering consulting firms
Technical consulting companies like Aerotek and Kelly Engineering place automation technicians at client sites and often handle visa sponsorship for qualified candidates with specialized skills.
Look for roles requiring advanced PLC programming
Positions demanding expertise in Allen-Bradley, Siemens Step 7, or Schneider Electric programming systems are more likely to qualify as specialty occupations requiring visa sponsorship.
Consider roles in emerging automation technologies
Companies implementing Industry 4.0, IoT sensors, or robotic process automation often struggle to find qualified local talent and are more willing to sponsor visas.
Network through professional engineering associations
Join ISA (International Society of Automation) and local engineering chapters. Many automation engineers find sponsorship opportunities through professional connections and industry meetups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do automation technicians qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, when the role requires specialized engineering knowledge and a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or related engineering field. The position must involve complex automation systems, not routine maintenance tasks. USCIS typically approves these petitions when the job duties demonstrate specialty occupation requirements.
What degree do I need for automation technician visa sponsorship?
You need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or closely related field. Some employers accept computer science or industrial engineering degrees if combined with relevant automation experience. Associate degrees alone typically don't meet H-1B visa specialty occupation requirements.
Which companies sponsor automation technicians most often?
Manufacturing companies like General Motors, Boeing, and pharmaceutical firms frequently sponsor these roles. Industrial automation vendors (Rockwell Automation, Siemens), engineering consulting firms, and companies implementing new automation systems also regularly file H-1B petitions for qualified technicians.
How to find Automation Technician jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Automation Technician jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international candidates with sponsoring employers. Focus your search on manufacturing companies, automotive firms, and industrial facilities that commonly sponsor H-1B, TN visa, or EB-3 visas for technical roles. These employers frequently need skilled automation technicians and have established sponsorship processes for qualified international candidates.
Can automation technicians get green cards through employment?
Yes, most qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 permanent residence categories. Engineers with advanced degrees or exceptional ability may qualify for EB-2, while those with bachelor's degrees typically file under EB-3. The PERM labor certification process usually takes 18-24 months.
What if my degree doesn't exactly match the automation technician role?
USCIS allows related degrees if you can demonstrate how your coursework applies to automation work. For example, computer science with controls coursework or industrial engineering with automation focus. You may need a credentials evaluation and detailed explanation of your academic background's relevance.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Automation Technician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
