Target companies with L-1A pipelines
If you've managed technical programs for a multinational for at least one year, the L-1A intracompany transfer may be faster than H-1B. It bypasses the lottery entirely and supports EB-1C green card eligibility down the line.
Quantify program scope in your resume
USCIS scrutinizes Director-level petitions for evidence of genuine specialty occupation. Listing portfolio size, engineering headcount managed, and cross-functional systems complexity strengthens the petition and reduces the risk of an RFE.
Prioritize companies with proven sponsorship history
Large tech employers like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft file hundreds of TPM petitions annually with established processes. Targeting these companies reduces friction and signals the role will survive USCIS scrutiny on specialty occupation grounds.
Understand your degree field matters, not just your level
A bachelor's in computer science, engineering, or information systems directly supports a TPM specialty occupation argument. A degree in an unrelated field makes the petition harder to defend, even at the Director level.
Ask about cap-exempt sponsorship options
Universities, nonprofits, and affiliated research organizations are cap-exempt H-1B employers. Technical program directors at these institutions can start any time of year, skipping the April lottery and the months-long wait entirely.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer
Premium processing reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days. For a Director-level hire, this is a reasonable ask during offer negotiation. Many employers routinely include it for senior technical roles without needing to be pushed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Director of Technical Program Management considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS generally accepts that Director-level TPM roles require at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field. The key is that the job description must reflect systems-level complexity and not resemble a general management position. Petitions that clearly tie the Director's responsibilities to a specific technical discipline have a strong track record of approval.
What visa types do employers most commonly use to sponsor this role?
H-1B visa is the most common path for external hires. L-1A is widely used for candidates transferring from an overseas office of the same company, and it has the added advantage of supporting an EB-1C green card petition later. O-1A is an option for candidates with an exceptional track record, such as patents, major technical awards, or published research. Each path has different timing and eligibility requirements.
Does my degree field affect H-1B approval for this job title?
It does, significantly. A degree in computer science, electrical engineering, systems engineering, or information technology gives the attorney the clearest argument that your education directly supports the role. Degrees in business or general management are harder to tie to a specialty occupation, particularly at the Director level where USCIS may question whether the role is primarily managerial rather than technically specialized.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for Director of Technical Program Management roles?
The H-1B lottery applies equally regardless of title, so selection odds depend on the overall registration pool, not the role itself. However, because this is a senior position, employers are generally more motivated to use premium processing, retain experienced immigration counsel, and refile quickly after an RFE. The specialty occupation argument for this title is also well-established, so approval rates post-selection are relatively high at major tech companies.
Where can I find Director of Technical Program Management jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct option. The platform filters jobs by sponsorship willingness, so you're not guessing which employers will actually file a petition. For a Director-level role, it's also worth browsing companies with consistent H-1B or L-1A filing histories, since established programs move faster and with fewer complications than first-time sponsors.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Director Of Technical Program Management jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
